Ok, we have a thread for dragons, and vampires, and bears oh my! I thought it'd be interesting to start the ball rolling on werewolves and their place (if any) in Christian Fantasy. I'm thinking more in the terms of lycanthropic werewolves (people that turn completely into wolves) than I am the horror movie werewolves (people that turn into bloodthirsty human-wolf hybrids). But discussion on both is welcome.

In Christ,
Jordan

Cool! That's an interesting way of handling it. Like the Germanic name. Are they sentient creatures?

*Stitch voice* Ooooooohhhhhhhhh I like it!
Seriously, sounds pretty cool. Reminds me a little bit of the wolf-brothers in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. They're random individuals who communicate telepathically with wolves, and they too run the risk of becoming completely wolf in their minds. This is the main struggle for one of the main characters, his fear of going to far and becoming all beast in his mind. Like it, like it, like it!

Cool, Inesdar!

I don't see anything thing wrong with Werewolves, unless you portray them as bloodthirsty "good guys."

I have never even considered putting werewolves into a story of mine. I feel so uncreative. :D

Werewolves seem to be different from vampires, though. In everything I have ever read they have been victims of a cursed disease that almost forces them out of their mind into a horrific shape, and sentences them to a life of crime.

This seems a little different to me from a demon possessed corpse. Or even a Satanist.

Why not have good werewolves? Or werewolves that needed to be redeemed?

Azriel- And who do you think you are, running round leaving scars, collecting your jar of hearts, and tearing love apart? You're gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul, so don't come back to me. Don't come back at all...

Willow - If you think about the original concept of werewolves, men that change into wolves, there's no reason that they can't be portrayed as good guys in fantasy fiction. This is true of the wolf-man hybrids, it doesn't make them inherently evil. And that's generally the vibe that I seem to be getting from everyone else around here.

I'd agree.:) It seems a lot like Beorn almost from The Hobbit too. I mean he'd be like a were-bear? :D

There's nothing wrong with having a werewolf needing to rid himself of the disease or even just as a species that is just that, but in most legends, they were bloodthirsty, even demonic creatures. That was what I was saying could not be portrayed as good.
