In my story, the MC plays the main role in a rebellion, acting as if she were of noble blood. She has two ladies in waiting (possibly three), and I have a new male character who needs a role to fill.

I thought about him being a sort of escort for the MC. What other position could he fill in that respect? (It doesn't have to be an escort, just something like it)

He will possibly be a spy, too, or a spy in training. I'm still trying to decide if that part stay with this character or another character.

Any thoughts?

In the times when ladies rode horses, they always had a groom to ride with them. That's an idea. It really depended on the lady how close they were to their groom, so it would be flexible.

Though, if your characters don't ride horses for sport, that would sort of make the idea no use. :P

So the groom would only be used if she were riding for sport? Why would they have to be close?

Historically, I believe, they did only use them if the lady was a frequent rider and of at least sophisticatedly wealthy standing...if you know what I mean. * laughs a bit * If they were a frequent rider and of that standing, that usually meant that they had carriages if they actually wanted to go somewhere, so they rode for exercise or sport or air or whatever they did things like that for, not really to get somewhere specific.... Sorry, I'm trying not to sound like I know a lot, 'cause I don't. :D I haven't studied it, only seen it portrayed, so my details are a bit vague.

No reason, I just mentioned that that was something that you could change easily depending on the circumstances and characters in your story. :)
