| And it’s not “a mute point,” as I thought when I was younger. A moot point, as everyone knows, is an issue regarded as potentially debatable, but no longer practically applicable. I suppose a mute point would be a point that no one ever spoke about. We think a lot about marketing in the publishing world, or really any world where you’re trying to sell something. And rightly so. Marketing is a vital part of selling. After all, if people don’t know about your product and become convinced that they must have it, and that it’s worth whatever price you’ve put on it, then you won’t sell anything, and you will be a failure as a businessperson. But really, without a good product, marketing is a moot point. (Now you understand the seemingly random title.) Read the rest of this article on my blog! And let me know any thoughts you have on this topic. | |

"as everyone knows" isn't quite true, since there are actually two nearly-opposite meanings of "moot": something that is open to and relevant for debate, and something that's of no practical relevance at all---not worth debating. The first is apparently the original and the meaning understood by most of the English-speaing world, while the second has somehow become dominant in America. Avoiding the word entirely is probably a good idea, as it's likely to be read by someone with the unintended meaning. | |

| I read this article on your blog, and liked it muchly. I certainly agree that good stories take time and effort, and rushing to publish for the sake of publishing is not worth it. | |
