Post subject:  Nit-Picky Characters

Has anyone ever written/or read a character that nit-picks about everything? I think it would be a really interesting trait to give to someone, and I've never seen it done. So, how would you write a character that anyone could just tell is a nit-picker? How would it affect his relationships, and what would be the reaction of someone just becoming acquainted with him? How would his personality affect his decision making? What inconsistencies would this person have? I'm interested in hearing your ideas :)

Nit-picky, as in, an OCD character? Somebody wrote a character like that. Ever hear of Monk? It's a crime show and he's a majorly OCD detective... I think they wrote books too, but I can't advocate the books and I wouldn't say anybody I know would watch the show. :P

Either way, a character like that is rather interesting since they compulsiveness does indeed affect the kind of relationships they have with their friends. I've, personally, never written a character like that, but it would be fun to experiment with, like for a short story. :D

Yes, I've heard of Monk :) My dad used to watch it some. I'm not sure if I mean like that, though. I mean just someone who is always worried about every little thing, like... oh, bother, I'm not sure just exactly how to explain. Maybe it is OCD, to an extent, but I've never really liked physcological terms. Someone who analyzes everything about someone else, and tells them his opinion on every single thing as though it's the Gospel truth. Does that help?
I do agree, it would be fun to write someone like that. I'm thinking about doing it soon :)

I would call somebody like that more bold and outspoken than nit-picky. :P Can't say I've ever read a book with someone like that though, but I don't read much anyways.

I guess you could say one of my MCs, Gavin, is sort of like that...but he's really just obnoxious and he likes to step on everyone's toes. He's more of a bully than he is outspoken really.

O.O I can't have one of these in my book, I have too many in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*chuckles * Actually, I think this type of character would be hilarious on paper, especially if you played it up.

I think she means nit-picky like constantly telling you your shoes are untied, your hair is messy, your socks don't match, your grammar is wrong, etc, etc.

I agree with Airi; that kind of character would be hilarious in a story. :D But I haven't ever seen it played up that much, though there is one character who had it to a certain extent, especially when she's younger, and she was an excellent character.

Would Mrs. Lynde qualify?.....

No, probably not to the extent we are talking.

*still thinks someone should do this * I would, but I don't think I could pull it off. Plus, I don't have a character I could easily swing that direction.

Nit-picky to the point of paranoid? Awesome idea. :D

I enjoy annoying characters. They drive me insane, but they are hilarious too. :D
