We are launching a new site called FaceFinder for authors to find faces for their characters. However, we need faces for it to work! So, head over to FaceFinder and donate your face and maybe a friend's and help us out. I appreciate it!

That sounds very scary. :)

Sounds interesting Elanhil, but can I ask are these pictures open for anyone in the world to use?

Elanhil, I will donate if my parents allow it. :)

Elanor, if you look on the site, some names have a "watermark" on them that allows you to see the face but renders it unusable in book covers, etc. You can have it on there, and people can use it as a mental picture for their character, AKA, describing it in their book. If you don't mind, you can have it off of there, which means people can use it in book covers, etc.

Say, Elanhil, can people use the image as a model for an illustration, etc?

Yes, that pretty much sums it up.

Well, I like to discourage it on the site, but there's nothing I can do about it if they do...you know? *shrugs* Oh well...

That's the problem. Everybody seems to think so...

If you'll notice my own face isn't even up there...

I also think it would be weird if someone saw my face and thought it was a good representation of their character. Wouldn't it be weird to be depicted as the evil villain of a story?

Airi, you as a villain? Every aspect revolts! You're way to nice for one, and if you had to be serious, you would most likely laugh in the middle of it. :D (Well, I would, anyway if I had to be a villain! ;))

@Elanhil: you know what might be less scary, would be to have drawings/anime faces on there. A lot of people draw faces, I'm sure we'd all have a lot of them to contribute. My face would probably scare everyone off your site, anyway! ;) :D

Oh I'm quite the actress, Aussie. I play the villain quite well on stage ;) I don't look like a villain though... I think. Thanks though :)

I think that would work... I could draw some faces.

Drawing faces--including digital three dimensional faces--is an interesting idea.

I would donate my face... But it's taken... I don't want too many characters looking like me when I have one that looks like me.

I'll take candids in the mall though. ;)

It's really no more risky than Facebook. Most of us have our faces up there for anyone to see or steal. It just feels weird to do it deliberately.
Note that I am still not doing it, despite my own assurances.

In which case, Moriel, I reserve my post for those who do, and recognize its irrelevance to those who do not.

@Airianna: I know this is late, but it's pretty easy to ensure someone chooses you as a villain: just look like this.

Speaking for Hilly here (I'm not the one running the site :P) I think drawings would be fine...but I don't know about anime. =P Candids, probably not OK because you don't know if the person would be all right with it. It might be fine while this is small but later when it's big it could get us in trouble.

Eventually, I'm going to get together with a programming-savvy friend or two...the site will be changed completely. You'll have your own account, be able to see which faces you've uploaded, get little "prizes" for uploading, say, ten faces or something. You'll also be able to set on each picture you upload the privacy settings, which control the watermark and stuff. But - like I said, that's several years down the road, so you've got a LONG time to anticipate that.

Y'all, I am dragging this up again. :) Hilly and I are working on this and we've added several new faces in the past few days (Check it out at www.face-finder.net)

Just as a clarification:
Reiyen wrote:
It's really no more risky than Facebook. Most of us have our faces up there for anyone to see or steal. It just feels weird to do it deliberately

Really, this is not risky, especially if your face is branded. People are allowed to take inspiration from your face and write descriptions of the face, and base drawings off of your face, but not use the face itself.

Of course, your name is not mentioned once on the website; completely anonymous. And the more faces that we add, the more this can become a resource for authors.

Especially for y'all with Facebook (who have already sort of proved you don't have a problem with your image online) I'd be really grateful if you could submit stuff :) If you'd like, you could even just anonymously email the picture to submissions [at] face-finder [dot] net, so even I wouldn't know who you are :D

So yeah, check out the site and please donate! :)

I don't have many pictures of my face, but if you remind me on Monday in case I have forgotten I will try and take one to post. It is my sister's birthday on Sunday, so I won't get around to it until Monday.

FaceFinder has been updated with new faces. :) Head on over to:

http://www.face-finder.net/

And find the face you've been looking for. (OK, we don't have that many, but take a look anyways....)

Three questions:

1. Are photos allowed in black and white?

2. What kind of consent do you need from the subject?

3. Are pictures allowed in costume?

The reason I'm asking No.2 is because I asked one girl if I could take her picture, but I didn't specify I might put it on the internet. If you brand it, would it be possible to use it? :P

You've got some great faces so far, eru!

Wouldn't that be three questions, Lady E?

1. Are photos allowed in black and white?
Yes, they are :)

2. What kind of consent do you need from the subject?
The subject should know and understand that their description may be used/authors may base characters off of them. If they understand this and are fine with it, then submit a photo to be 'branded'. If they want their actual picture that they upload to be used in a book cover/manip, upload an unbranded one (Yes, that second option is quite scary - even my face is branded :D)

3. Are pictures allowed in costume?
Um, I suppose so. It's just your face, though, so not much costume would show. Anything that obscures the face is better not to submit. :)

Hope this helps!

So just asking if I can take their picture isn't enough? Rats.

Well considering that I only met her once and I was on a trip at the time (at a pumpkin patch, no less) that might be difficult. She looked about 9, so finding her to tell her that her picture might be online would be ... problematic. :P

Haha, alright. ;) Another thing: Is it alright if I edit the photo before sending it in, purely for color/clarity purposes? IE, blurring the background, sharpening the face, fixing the lighting?
