Dialogue is very annoying to write for me. I'm not exactly sure why, but in all my stories I tend to avoid it without even knowing that I'm avoiding it. I like reading dialogue but it's the writing part that gets to me. I try to not have much dialogue but sometimes it's necessary. Tell me what your thoughts are about dialogue.

(I realize I used the word dialogue in this post a bit too much, excuse my foolishness.)

I overuse dialogue.

Anyway, too little dialogue is better than too much. If you show with descriptions, and only use dialogue to have characters communicate, then it should work out fine.

I love dialogue in books. That's how my characters interact. The bond between Airianna and Tierin in my stories (brother and sister) would not be nearly as strong if I had less dialogue. In fact, there are statistics that show than some readers skip to dialogue.

I enjoy writing dialogue.

I also overuse dialogue, but I do not do it well. My dad's biggest criticism of my writing is that my dialogue is juvenile.

Ruby, I'm with you. I tend to avoid dialogue as well. Although that could just be because I'm a quiet person.

I think that dialogue is only boring if the characters talk exactly like each-other. Each person in real life talks differently than each-other; they have a different accent maybe and they might use certain words or phrases a lot, or they might stutter a lot.
When dialogue becomes boring and just a necessary thing that must be in your book, then I think you should change the way each character says something so that you know exactly who is talking - without reading their name after they speak - because you know what words or phrases the characters use a lot.
To me, dialogue is important because character development and story development happens within those lines of spoken words. You get to explain something through the knowledge of one of your characters instead of 'telling' the readers yourself.

Good point... I just feel like I don't want it to be necessary... I don't know I just really hate it, I'm gonna try to put more in my novel because without it my novel will be boring so, I'm gonna try... when I have time!!

I love dialogue. It's descriptions and such that I tend to have a harder time with. But dialogue tells you more about the characters, is frequently the best place for humor, can carry the greatest emotions (I love a good argument ), and can be so very, very interesting.

Do you know why you have a hard time with it? Does it feel unnatural, you don't know what the characters would say, something else?

I'm not sure. It definitely feels like I can't do it right and it just sounds wrong. I need to practice!

Practice is a good plan.

I'm not especially active, so I can't promise much, but if you'd like to PM me a small chunk of your dialogue at some point, I'd be willing to look at it and see if I can give you some tips.

It depends on the day for me. Somedays I don't have a problem with it, and other days my characters have rambling and pointless conversations. Sometimes I feel like I have a lack of dialog because I can't think of what to make them say!

I have the same problem. That's why I break out my thesaurus in the second draft.
