I've noticed that I write or type better when I'm listening to something. Do y'all have any favorites you like to listen to while you write or type?

Here are some of mine:
For fights/travel or exciting scenes:
Any of these:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=E.S.+posthumus&search_type=&aq=f
But especially Unstoppable, Nara, and Pompeii.
This and any other of the Star Wars soundtracks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DB7-K08vos
This and just about any of the related videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hss1puOeBmU
This one's a bit short, but really good while it lasts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EynZ65x6Tmo&NR=1
This one's a bit repetitive, but it really gets my fingers moving.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S95MRt45RQ4
This mix has some song snippets that you can't find anywhere else, which annoys me, but they're all pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfnyOvuwI3w

For more relaxed/calm or happy scenes:
This artist has some gorgeous music, but this is one of my absolute favorites.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__0QZTI6W5A
This choir is absolutely beautiful. They've been called Angel voices. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmuPJvr89Jw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMH5xy9gWxQ
This group has some wonderful music, but it's pretty dark. I wouldn't suggest listening to too much of it, or you might fall into chronic depression . . .*sob*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih61MJ72v1Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06d33K1ei6I&
Celtic music just blows me away:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ByOiV4UaW8
And I love Christmas carols.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCueI9YLcG8&feature=PlayList&p=FC2B2935C932016D&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=1

Anyway, that's my selection of favorites to type or write by. I'm sure they're all incredibly sappy and I'm the only one who would want to listen . . . but hey, it was worth a try. ;)

I have found that I like writing when it's silent, no people are around, and sometimes the only light is the one from the computer. I tried writing with music, and it didn't really work for me. Maybe I should try songs that last longer and don't have lyrics.

I really like Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony. Actually I like any classical music, it helps me drown out distractions without becoming a distraction itself (which is what happens for me with songs that have lyrics).

Post subject:  Re: Music to write/type by

I'm like Sapphira: I like it calm and quiet while I'm writing. I get the most writing done while I'm home alone with no younger siblings to interrupt me! ;) But if I do listen to music, it's usually classical.

Post subject:  Re: Music to write/type by

I love listening to music while I write, maybe it's because I find it perferable to loud siblings :) . I listen to average Christian alternative (at least that's what I think it is ;) ), and my favorites are from Tenth Avenue North and Natalie Grant.

Sometimes I think it helps if I play the music to a certain scene I'm working on. I find that the story plays out on itself. I got a really good part for my next book by listening to Flood by Jars of Clay.

Another artist I like is Enya. Her lyrics are kind of ethereal, and her words might be new agey, but I love the way they blend and flow with her music. It's highly relaxing, and if anyone is worried about lyrics, hers are kind of hard to hear anyway, it's like another instrument.

Has anyone heard of the "Freedom" CD by Michael W. Smith? It has a lot of good music to listen to while you're writing! And it's all instrumental, which I like when I'm writing.

Post subject:  Re: Music to write/type by

Yes, yes. Enya was actually one of the artists in my original post. I have two of her albums: Paint The Sky With Stars and Watermark. A lot of her music is also just instrumental or plain piano, like this one,or music with choir-like voices, like this one
Ciela, I can identify with the loud siblings. I have three. lol I've kind of learned to tune out the yelling and screaming, etc. It also helps that I have a room of my own and I can close the door if I need to. :D
I also like Point of Grace.

I LOVE CELTIC MUSIC!! Unfortunately, I don't have any. :( But I do have LOTR soundtrack (which is close), Narnia and Star Wars. I don't really listen to any music to words when I write. Normally I don't write with music. But I like to listen to Christian music a lot. Sons of Korah is great (that way you can listen to great music and the Bible at the same time, and they have cool accents). :D

I can't listen to music while I write... I start typing the words if it has any, or my mind goes blank if it doesn't... :( .

But I listen to music while I am cleaning, and the room looks cleaner than I ever could have imagined, usually. I love music!!!

Found some new epic music artists. Here's a sample of their work:
Immediate Music
Veigar
Two Steps From Hell
Future World Music
Audiomachine
X-ray Dog
Epic Score

Users that frequently upload epic music scores (I would highly recommend subscribing, if you have a youtube account):
jennyni20
DragonstarDT

Just as a warning, some of the songs may have semi-inappropriate pictures accompanying them. Scantily clad fantasy characters, etc. I don't worry about them, I'm there for the music, but thought some of you might like to know. If you're worried about the pictures, the user jennyni20 especially is one to watch out for. She has good music, however. *shrugs* your choice.

Here is a link for a playlist I compiled with my favorites from some of these artists. Enjoy!

I like to listen to film scores through last.fm, and general classical music through Minnesota Public Radio's website.

I also like to listen to piano and ethnic music through Magnatune.com. (note: some of this is classified as 'New Age' - I do not know how an instrumental piece can be "New Age" but whatever...)

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/bianco-forge/
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/costlow-sophomore/ (and others by Rob Costlow)
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/erik-polska/
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/erik-dram/

But I also like listening to the wind through the trees outside while writing too...anything that's far away from the noise inside the house. :)

Like several people, I write better when I listen to music. I usually listen music without lyrics that way I can get into the emotion of the music and apply it to my writing. ^^

I'm actually listening to music as I write this! :D I listen to a music website which I highly reccomend. It's called Pandora. http://www.pandora.com
It's a free radio music website that you can create your own radio channels if you type in an artist or song that you like. It will play songs/artists similar to the one you created the channel on. For example: I'm listening to my Jim Brickmann channel where I have heard Him Brickmann's music, and music from Philip Wesley, Greg Maroney, Lorie Line, ect. The website enables you to listen to listen to 40 hours of free music a month. (If you want to hear more you have to pay a monthly fee.)

Since I like a lot of music I have several channels! :D Plus, it has introduced me to several artists I've never heard of!

Hope that's useful! ;)

I now listen to Grooveshark a lot too. :)

I am right now listening to the Star Wars soundtracks - wow, I love 'em. :) Also have been listening to LotR: The Complete Recordings and various other film music, but after I get bored with that, I'm going to look for some good solo piano recommendations...maybe some classical too. :)

Across the Stars is a great piece for writing to. It's so sweet and sad and strong.

I usually listen to music with no words when I am writing, because if it does have words, then they find their way into the paragraph or story I am trying to write :)

My favorites are probably classical songs like 'Ode to Joy' (which is one of my favorite songs by the way) or artists Mozart and Bach...

The LotR soundtrack sounds good, but I do not have it... (well I could just follow the YouTube links, though I would probably forget to do so..) But I do like to listen to the Eragon soundtrack, which I have. :)

When I listen to music without words it's usually New Age, and a song I can feel the emotion in. Those are the best for writing. I just wrote a quick short story called Grey to Finding Beauty by Craig Armstrong. Here's a quick link to it. Hopefully it works...by the way, the first ten seconds of the song is silence. I have no idea why...

Here's a new one I discovered by Clint Mansell (his music is well worth checking out -- lots of good movie soundtracks, including Requiem for a Tower [YAY!]) : Together We will Live Forever
Really good for any sad parts *sob* Man, I want to learn to play that!

I have part of the soundtrack for The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe that I like to listen to. I have listened to some music so much that I can simply play it in my head whenever I want (Michael Card's Prelude on his CD The Unveiling). :) Sometimes I like writing when it is quiet, but I almost always have a song stuck in my head, so it helps set the mood, so to speak, especially in really exciting parts. ;)

(I love Watermark, by the way. Now I need to find my MP3 player!)

I always listen to music when I write. I can't write if I don't. :) Usually it's scores, like Star Wars, sometimes it's music from Two Steps From Hell (sorry, Lady E, I wasn't introduced to it by you.. ;)). Most often it's a combination of both. I generally listen to sad, break-your-heart lonesome type music while I write, even when doing chase scenes or duels. :) I don't listen to stuff with lyrics if I'm writing, because it's just too distracting.

I've got a whole long list of sad music someplace if anyone wants it... I think I've got one of epic music too.

Ok! :) Here are the sad ones. They're all from movie scores, except for ones from Two Steps from Hell. Oh, and a disclaimer... I do not endorse any of the movies from which these are from(no not even SW, just to be safe ;)), and most I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole! :)

Sad songs

Braveheart, “Murron’s Burial”
Braveheart, “Betrayal and Desolation”
Enemy at the Gates, “Betrayal”
Gladiator, “Patricide”
Gladiator, “Am I Not Merciful?”
The Passion of the Christ, “Peter Denies Jesus”
The Passion of the Christ, “Mary Goes to Jesus”
The Passion of the Christ, “Crucifixion”
The Patriot, “The Burning of the Plantation”
The Patriot, “The Parish Church Aflame”
Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith, “Anakin’s Betrayal”
Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith, "Padme's Ruminations"
Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith, "The Birth of the Twins and Padme's Destiny"
Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith, “The Immolation Scene”
Gladiator, “Sorrow”
City of Angels, “An Angel Falls”
City of Angels, “City of Angels”
Schindler’s List, “Theme from ‘Schindler’s List’”
Schindler’s List, “Remembrances”
Schindler’s List, “I Could Have Done More”
Schindler’s List, “Making the List”
Lord of the Dance, "Lament"
Lord of the Dance, "Sulia Ruin"
Fellowship of the Ring, Extended Edition, "Khazad-dum" (just the last two or three minutes are sad, actually, after Gandalf is 'killed')
Two Steps from Hell
“Endless Night”
“Equus”
“Lament for the Lonely”
“Love and Loss”
“River of Tears”
“Starvation”

That enough sad music for you? :D I've got more, I think, that wasn't on my list. :)

Ok, I don't have much on my Epic music list. I prefer sad music. ;) But here's what I've got.

Epic songs

Crimson Tide, "Crimson Tide Theme"
At World's End, "Drink Up Me Hearties"
At World's End, "One Day"
The Last Samurai, "Idyll’s End"
The Incredibles, "Life’s Incredible Again"
The Incredibles, "Off to Work"
The Incredibles, "The Glory Days"
How to Train Your Dragon (the entire score)
Two Steps from Hell (yes, I know these are almost all the same, but they are sad and epic. :D)
“Endless Night”
“Equus”
“Lament for the Lonely”
“Love and Loss”
“River of Tears”
“Starvation”
“Infinite Legends”

Narnia and LotR are also nice, epic soundtracks. :D (duh... :D)

Here are some songs I listen to:

Diary of Jane by Breakin Benjamin
Breath by Breaking Benjamin
Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World
I I Die Young by The Band Perry

Artists:

Vitamin String Quartet
Owl City

If anything I listen to more of that music while I draw rather than write. *shrug*

Movie scores ranging from "The Magnificent Seven" to Pirates of the Caribbean to LotR to Indiana Jones to the Bourne movies to the Three Musketeers. I also listen to traditional Irish folk music, John Williams music, and New Age music.
David Arkenstone is a really good artist.

NOTE: I heartily recommend all the movies, but they do have lots of violence, some blood, and some have a quite a bit of language. (Indiana Jones and the Bourne trilogy)
