Post subject:  Traveling makes for a long story...

Three of my characters have to travel from the eastern part of the forest in my fantasy world (I'll post a picture of the map in a few minutes after I finish it. I don't know it that'll help any, but I was going to post it anyway) to the mountains on the eastern edge of the land/world. They will have to travel past the forest, across a marsh, and to the mountains. I'm trying to judge how many days that'll take, but I'm trying to get a good idea of how many miles that'd be first.

Another thing that I worried about was making the story too boring. I didn't know if I should tell what happened during the entire trip (there's more story after they reach the mountains, and I don't know how long that will take), or just some things. Nothing incredibly interesting will happen, other than the two Elves that are traveling talking about various things and becoming closer friends (which I could probably show by the way they treat each other after the trip).

So after all that rambling, my main questions are:

1. Do you have a rough idea of how many miles long that trip will be (it doesn't have to be perfect, just believable)?

2. Should I tell about the whole trip, or just a few parts (like the first few days, which I have in my first draft, then just say the rest of the trip was uneventful)?

3. Any other feedback? (I'm also wondering if this book could end up too long, or how long is "too long")

I'm off to finish the map.

1. It depends on how long your characters have been traveling

2. You could keep talking about it as they go, but leave intervals of time (usually from a day to a week) in between what you write sometimes.

3. As long as your book is under 1000 pages, I think it is fine!

I always struggle with this! Usually you don't really need to say the specific distance. You could just say that it was a very long journey or something like that.

Well, if the rest of the trip was uneventful, then you can say that! ;) I wouldn't put too many things in just for the purpose of length, though. That can get rather boring sometimes.

In my opinion, there's no such thing as a book that's too long! :D

That's my 2 cents! I hope it helps!
