Hi,
In my world, there is a huge range of forestry mountains in which there lives many strange animals, including unicorns. Now, these unicorns have been thoroughly explained: their horn is made of keratin, the same material that composes your fingernails, so the horns keep growing. All unicorns have two blood vessels that go up the horn; sometimes, the vein and artery will make a spiral or circular design, giving the horn a colorful spiral. The horn contains pigment to give it color, often a metallic shade of the animal's coat color. The unicorns must file down their horns on a regular basis, so explorers in the mountains often find silvery dust on rocks and other hard objects.

The unicorns often have a metallic sheen to their coats and look much like Akhal-Teke or Arabian horses. They stand around 15-17 hands and have a dished profile, high tail carriage and a regal air. Their coloring ranges from a silver dun (grulla) to a golden dun (like a Palomino, but with a white dorsal stripe), non-bleaching black, brown dun (bay with or without dorsal stripe), dun, dapple gray and silver dapple (think vibrant dapples that last the animal's entire life), gray (white coat on black skin), liver chestnut (dark brown to black coat with light cream to white points) and many other colors. Foals are born after a one-year gestation period and have short, blunt and stubby horns and a iridescent coat that comes into color around two months for colts and three for fillies.

Well, that's my description of the unicorns so far... what do you think? I'm also looking for another name for them besides "unicorn". Maybe a combination of the words "horn", "horse" and "one" in a foreign language?

Let me guess...you're really into horses. :) Your unicorns sound really pretty! What about Adallaon for a name? It's a combination of Irish Gaelic for horn (adharc), horse (capall) and one (aon). Just what you ordered. :D

Yep, you got it. Though I can't say that I go bonkers about horses, I do love them and wish I had one. :D

I tried to make the unicorns mysterious and regal, so I wanted them to be beautiful. They might seem a bit too perfect when I type the description out; they look a lot better in my mind, if you know what I mean.

I love your word, Iylde! I'm pretty sure that I will keep it, unless I make a language for the area in which case I will incorporate Adallaon into the vocabulary.

Thanks.

PS: how do you pronounce Adallaon, Iylde? I'm guessing ad-al-lay-on, but correct me if I'm wrong.

They sound amazing! I love horses too (not like absolutely crazy, but like you said, I wish I had one! :D) and I think you described them really well!
And I like your name, Iylde. :)

Your pronunciation is probably right. I actually have no idea. But since it's a word combination, you can make up your own pronunciation!

Thank you! It's the name I made up for my favourite character in my first book.

Yes, they are somewhere between animal and human intelligence... I have not yet decided. :D

Just on personal taste, I like intelligent creatures better. But that really depends on how many creatures you have in your world already.

So what role do they fill in your story?

Sorry to reply so late, Inesdar.

Now they are officially intelligent/sentient/sapient. I also changed the spelling of their name from Adallaon to Adaláon, so now it fits with the spelling system of my language.

I'm going to write another post in a minutes describing all five of my special creatures and their roles.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments and questions on the Adaláon. Since this thread is no longer active and the Adaláon are not in any of my current writing projects, I will be locking and archiving this thread. If, in the future, I do resume working on the Adaláon, I will start a new thread for them.

Thank you!
~ Evening
