Post subject:  FaceFinder

We are launching a new site called FaceFinder for authors to find faces for their characters. However, we need faces for it to work! So, head over to FaceFinder and donate your face and maybe a friend's and help us out. I appreciate it!

Sounds interesting Elanhil, but can I ask are these pictures open for anyone in the world to use?

Post subject:  Re: Faces needed!

Elanhil, I will donate if my parents allow it. :)

Elanor, if you look on the site, some names have a "watermark" on them that allows you to see the face but renders it unusable in book covers, etc. You can have it on there, and people can use it as a mental picture for their character, AKA, describing it in their book. If you don't mind, you can have it off of there, which means people can use it in book covers, etc.

Say, Elanhil, can people use the image as a model for an illustration, etc?

Yes, that pretty much sums it up.

Well, I like to discourage it on the site, but there's nothing I can do about it if they do...you know? *shrugs* Oh well...

That's the problem. Everybody seems to think so...

I also think it would be weird if someone saw my face and thought it was a good representation of their character. Wouldn't it be weird to be depicted as the evil villain of a story?

Airi, you as a villain? Every aspect revolts! You're way to nice for one, and if you had to be serious, you would most likely laugh in the middle of it. :D (Well, I would, anyway if I had to be a villain! ;))

@Elanhil: you know what might be less scary, would be to have drawings/anime faces on there. A lot of people draw faces, I'm sure we'd all have a lot of them to contribute. My face would probably scare everyone off your site, anyway! ;) :D

It's really no more risky than Facebook. Most of us have our faces up there for anyone to see or steal. It just feels weird to do it deliberately.

Post subject:  Re: Faces needed!

@Airianna: I know this is late, but it's pretty easy to ensure someone chooses you as a villain: just look like this.

Speaking for Hilly here (I'm not the one running the site :P) I think drawings would be fine...but I don't know about anime. =P Candids, probably not OK because you don't know if the person would be all right with it. It might be fine while this is small but later when it's big it could get us in trouble.

Eventually, I'm going to get together with a programming-savvy friend or two...the site will be changed completely. You'll have your own account, be able to see which faces you've uploaded, get little "prizes" for uploading, say, ten faces or something. You'll also be able to set on each picture you upload the privacy settings, which control the watermark and stuff. But - like I said, that's several years down the road, so you've got a LONG time to anticipate that.

Post subject:  Re: Faces needed!

Y'all, I am dragging this up again. :) Hilly and I are working on this and we've added several new faces in the past few days (Check it out at www.face-finder.net)

Just as a clarification:
Reiyen wrote:

Really, this is not risky, especially if your face is branded. People are allowed to take inspiration from your face and write descriptions of the face, and base drawings off of your face, but not use the face itself.

Of course, your name is not mentioned once on the website; completely anonymous. And the more faces that we add, the more this can become a resource for authors.

Especially for y'all with Facebook (who have already sort of proved you don't have a problem with your image online) I'd be really grateful if you could submit stuff :) If you'd like, you could even just anonymously email the picture to submissions [at] face-finder [dot] net, so even I wouldn't know who you are :D

So yeah, check out the site and please donate! :)

Three questions:

1. Are photos allowed in black and white?

2. What kind of consent do you need from the subject?

3. Are pictures allowed in costume?

The reason I'm asking No.2 is because I asked one girl if I could take her picture, but I didn't specify I might put it on the internet. If you brand it, would it be possible to use it? :P

Post subject:  Re: FaceFinder

1. Are photos allowed in black and white?
Yes, they are :)

2. What kind of consent do you need from the subject?
The subject should know and understand that their description may be used/authors may base characters off of them. If they understand this and are fine with it, then submit a photo to be 'branded'. If they want their actual picture that they upload to be used in a book cover/manip, upload an unbranded one (Yes, that second option is quite scary - even my face is branded :D)

3. Are pictures allowed in costume?
Um, I suppose so. It's just your face, though, so not much costume would show. Anything that obscures the face is better not to submit. :)

Hope this helps!
