I have a creature in mind that is kind of like a huge wolf, very furry with large fangs. I don't have a name for them yet, but they live on a desolate moor with the remains of a race of dragons, which the evil Andunians killed when they invaded. They're an adaption of regular wolves, with long, shaggy coats that keep out the cold rather like a polar bear's fur. They are basically killing machines. What do you think?
I will also tell you that they are a large problem for the main characters, trapped on the moor at night. *creepy*...

Sounds awesome! :D The moor sounds pretty awesome between the wolves and the dragon... scary, but a cool fantasy setting. You could make a pretty cool story with that.

Well, the dragons are mostly dead. I'm writing a fight now between the whatevertheyares and the questing party, but it would be a good idea to have a dragon come in somewhere. If there are any left... :( and yes, it is very creepy. That was my objective. :)

Sounds like you did a pretty good job of making it creepy :)

Do the giant wolves and remaining dragons ever fight? And are the dragons evil  ?

No, the dragons aren't evil, just wild. There used to be a kind of mutual respect between dragons and humans/elves, but now even the elves dare not approach them. (In the words of Main Character #2 [Aaron];)) The Andunians took over and sent soldiers to kill the dragons because of the advantage the people had over them if some of them could get dragon eggs and bond with the hatchlings...so the remaining dragons are savage. The race has pretty much died out. The dragons + riders that are left are in dungeons in Andun. :( Some of my characters end up there at one point...but I don't want to give anything away. ;)
Interesting point about the dragons and wolves fighting each other. I'll have to say I don't know. :?

Okay, now I'm really hoping that someone can help me come up with a name for these things. Working title is "Wargs", but of course I can't use that because I'd be pulling a Christopher Paolini--stealing things from Mr. Tolkien. My Mom's just been calling them that for lack of anything better...argh. Needs to be something fierce...'

And please excuse the extravagant colors...this forum is so cool I can't resist...lol

What about Hiacail? I don't know if that sounds very fierce.

They sound very cool!
I'll have to think about the name, but it could take me awhile. I'm terrible at names.

That's GREAT, Princess Iylde! Where'd you come up with that??
Might modify it a bit, and I'm still open for suggestions.
Man you guys are good. :D

So how long did it take you to come up with those? :D

These wolves sound very awesome - I think that scary scene will add a lot to the story (it's always good to have dark and light... a picture is nothing w/out contrast). I think it would be neat as well if you had... well, I wasn't sure if the dragons were alive or not when you were talking about their remains... but if you had their skeletons where the wolves lived. You know, really tall and the wolves could appear out of them with their eyes glinting... it sounds scarier when I write it down. ;) Sort of like in Lion King.

ooooh you guys are great! robynwaltz that sounds fantastic. What I have currently is that a shaggy black shape suddenly appears on a mountain ridge with the moon behind it...but I could use that too. Sweet.

Umm... a few seconds, or about as long as it took for me to type them. :)

Here are some more: Veidalass, grendlika, hreidzei, nhalo, etc...

I used my old standby, an Irish Gaelic translator. I typed in a word that applies to a wolf, and then I tweaked it a little. The word the translator gave me was much longer, and less fierce sounding. :)

Iylde, do you think you could provide us with your magical link to this wonderful Gaelic translator of yours? :D

I think Hiacail sounds good, but I think that it would sound a little more fierce as Hiacai (dropped the l at the end). It makes me think of the Kai from the Last Sin Eater.

I'm not very good at coming up with fierce names, but I do remember one that I have written down here somewhere. I will post it when I find it. I think it was Vortac...

I like your tweak better! The original word was starrfhiacail, but I thought that was too long, and sounded sparkly. :P The link is: http://www.irishdictionary.ie/home .

Yeah, I don't think I could take a sparkly wolf seriously. :P

OK, here are some other names from my official list of names:
T'vanik
Crevan
Corvack

Those were the most fierce-sounding ones...

Nice names, Inesdar. Maybe if she doesn't use them, I will. ;)

I love the wolves, they have that creepy, semi-magical aura around them.

Sorry, I always associate the letter 'g' with wolves :).

I like like Vraug the best.
How come I can't come up with names like that?! :D

I like Aerg. Maybe that's an end result of 'Warg', Inesdar. Hm, I'd also prefer something for which the plural is ___s. (Yes, I'm picky.)

Ciela, thanks! I like creepy semi-magical things.

I like some of the name samples thrown around for the wolves. I think my personal favorite is "vuarg", though. Here's one... grandevulf hehe. :D

I have a very large wolf in my story "To The Valley Of Dragons" named Runner. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT.

He's actually one of a breed of wolves native to the Forever Lands. I'm also working on an exceptionally frightening bat or dragon winged wolf, about the size of a war horse, perhaps a bit bigger. Their natural enemies are griffins.

Runner sounds very cool, 6stringed. You should totally start a thread on him so you can tell us more about him and his species. :D

What do the wolves eat, Eruwaedhiel? Do they live anywhere else in your world, besides on the ridge where your characters meet them? They are super cool. And scary. They don't sound like they'd make good pets. ;)

Thank you Evening :) The Forever Lands wolves really aren't much different than the wolves in our own world, other than they are a larger species so I see no need to start a thread on them. The other I mentioned, The Walven, are in fact much different. Only I've taken away the wings, and went another direction instead. They do have a thread here :)
