Post subject:  Fantasia...thus far

Hello peoples. For the past month or so I've been working on and off on trying to solidify a map for Fantasia. The problem is that it was one of the first world's I started mapping back when a world map was land stretching to the edge of the paper with maybe a little coast cutting in here and there. Because of this, making continents has been really hard because I'm not used to thinking of Fantasia as having continents. I've attached the maps I've come up with thus far. Input appreciated.

File comment: This is the foundational image. A scan of a tracing I made from my edition of Atlas Maior of 1665. The piece of paper was to large to scan all at once so I scanned it in two parts and pieced them back together as best I could.

File comment: Using my Campaign Cartographer program, I copied the general river courses and mountain ranges from the original scan.

File comment: This is roughly my third or fourth attempt to expand the original concept into a single continent. It's the most satisfactory so far.

File comment: I started by pasting the continent above into the blank map and then using Jay's World-Geography-Fractalling technique in my own fashion to find the other continents. I'm not very excited with the results. Feels to me like the whole world is leaning...and not on the Everlasting Arms eithe... But it's also my best world map of Fantasia so far.

So those are what I've come up with so far. For instance, once I'm completely set on Continent one, I'll finish developing it's rivers and mountains and so-on beyond the original frame work. Likewise, once I'm settled on the other continents, I'll develop them further. And finally, once I'm certain that I won't be needing to copying and pasting the rivers and mountains from the original frame, I'll add forests and towns and terrain contours. It's all in a very undeveloped stage at this point, and I would desperately appreciate any comments or advise on the current lay-of-the-land and how I can improve on it.
Thanks a bunch.

Jordan

Ok, I am not a map maker but have worked with CC and Gimp on some maps. I think the landmass is pretty good but one of the issues with Cc is its inability to add the small details. Really, the continent should be surrounded by thousands of small islands, inlets, and things like that. But for a normal fantasy map I think what you have is workable.

As far as the landmass, I do not think it is leaning. However, it should be broken up a bit more unless you do not want the detail.

To progress, I would reccommend you really think about the climate and major land masses. Do you have the ... oooh, I can't remember the name... Fractural Pro maybe? It is the program that generates the climate for a world. not sure if you can load in a Cc map but maybe you can.

Keep showing your progress, I would really enjoy seeing it progress.

Wow! Someone who knows CC3! Awesome! Yes I have fractal terrains, and yes you can import it into CC3, but I'm not it's biggest fan. The main reason for the lack of details is my uncertainty about the land masses, once I'm sure about those, I'll go back in and add the details (like better mountain symbols and vegetation symbols). I have a general concept of the climates in my mind that will be further developed once I'm sure that this is what I want to work with. Thanks for the suggestions!

I definitely like the level of detail you created for your first two images. My main question is how the fourth image relates to the others... it seems to create huge other landmasses not shown in either of the first three. I like your software and detail, my world doesn't have much for rivers as yet. I just cheated and kept my map just like your first and explained away the problems with a flat world with some interesting definitely fantasy-only elements. The fact is you don't need multiple continents if you don't want them, but if you do they offer plenty of opportunity for expansion.

One quick question. Why don't the rivers go all the the way to the ocean? (can't remember- I think it was the second or third pic)

Normally rivers always run to the sea unless there is a reason.

Reiyen, again I started with the concept of the first map and then kept expanding outward with the idea of constructing a more complete world. Hence why the third picture shows the continent that the first frame is set on and the fourth shows the rest of the world.

Chaplain, the rivers run as far as the borders of the original map. Once I'm sure that I like the layout of the land, I'll continue them to the seas. Likewise, once I'm comfortable with the other continents, I'll give them rivers and mountains.
