Post subject:  The History of the Red World Part III - A Third Power Yet
The Seven-Cities Kingdom proved to be the most capable of the kingdoms, and also in the position most apt for advancement. As they pressed southward they came upon the Halls of Iorin, which had been abandoned as the dragons fled from men, whom they now feared greatly. Iorin had disappeared from even among the dragons; few had any idea of his whereabouts. The men razed the Halls of Iorin, and on their ruins they built the first of the Seven Cities, Okthin. As more settlers arrived they founded Tomfie. Wizards began to differentiate themselves from the rest of society more distinctly, and seeking a place of quiet to practice their craft, the founded their own city of Thyron, which attracted wizards from far and wide, though many remained in the provinces. The history of the other three cities is scanty.

The southern kingdom's close proximity to the dragon and vaeance remnants did precipitate wars. The dragons established their capital in the beautiful valley of Keya-Nol, founding Keya-Nol Churt. (Churt is the word for city, and a Keya-Nol, coming from the words for ten and flower, is a ten-petalled flower which grew in that valley). Men's borders continued to press on the flying beasts.

Eventually they could stand no further encroachment. The dragons and vaeances struck out hoping to move the borders of their empire away from their capital. However, men again proved stronger and pushed back the dragons initial onslaught, capturing the valley of Keya-Nol. An armistice was made in which the men kept their conquests. Thus ended the Second Dragon War.

Only a few more years passed before the dragons sought to regain their capital, but the war proved to be a war of attrition with neither side gaining ground and both losing lives. Peace was made, and thus ended the Third Dragon War.

After this, Aerykun returned from hiding in the Shadow Realm. He struck fastest at the North Kingdom, subduing it quickly by his awesome power and his armies. The men of the North became vassals and supported his garrison.

Kion, by now leader of the dragons and loyal vaeances, was rapidly losing support among the flying beasts. Many dragons and vaeances were fleeing to the mountains and wild lands, forsaking all bonds of government and brotherhood. He sought one last time to rejoin his fractured nation by war, and started the Fourth Dragon War. Again it appeared a stalemate, a result the dragons could not afford. Kion at last resorted to the use of his tongue over his breath, and arranged a treaty with the king of the Seven Cities.

I like how you said "Kion resorted at last to the use of his tongue over his sword." It made me smile. I'll have some more in depth comments soon, but I don't have time to post them at the moment.

Okay, I have them! :D I really liked the name of the dragons' capital city; it sounded dragon-ish and cool. :cool: I also like how everything in your histories makes sense, something which mine don't really have. Anyway, I really liked this chapter. I like dragons. ^^ So, does the fourth chapter of your history tell about the treaty?

Okay, so first I have to say that I love how in-depth your histories are. Now for the questions. How come the dragons are always losing to the humans? Aren't dragons like super-strong and have breath powers and stuff? And whose side is Aerkyun on?

I'll tackle the easy question first: Aerykun is on his own side, or more correctly on the side of Narok. His best hope would be to reclaim the Red World from the dragons (and now men) so that he can build an army to attack the White Cross again.

Why do the dragons lose? The fact is that the dragons due have a lot of strength and breath fire, as well as work magic, but they have some drawbacks.
First off, they have no hands. Their attacks either force them to put their head right in by the enemy, because the flames don't go more than a few feet naturally, or to go in with their chicken-foot like claws. A spear can finish that off really quick.
Secondly, after the first few generations, dragons stopped being so large and so capable of using magic.
Thirdly, they have some cooperation difficulties due to the vaeance-dragon rivalry.
Fourthly, the men have magic and are not just ordinary guys. At this point they still have some of the enchanted weapons of the Green World from whence they came. They have a warrior heritage going far back.
Also, the constant attacks of the dragons have actually backfired on them. The dragons population is not growing, while the men are, because men have children far more often. Also, the men know the necessity of warfare; that is, because the dragons are attacking, every man is trained for war.
The dragons are also constantly fracturing and have no appointed leader ever since Iorin disappeared (which was between the First and Second Dragon Wars probably). Kion commands some loyalty, but many keep leaving. Every time the dragons lose some more choose to flee to the mountains or the sea or to just go hide.
