Another point against the syntax: I can't tell all those brackets apart anyway. So I used ordinary outline indenting; is it any harder or easier to read then the accepted format?

Also unfinished. Is there such a thing as a finished essence map?

And... what on earth is the difference between spirit and soul? I pretty much guessed which attribute to put in which category... *sigh*

I. Soul
........a. Terror
................i. Wind in a tornado
................ii. Cannons on a battlefield
......b. Gentleness
................i. A newborn lamb
................ii. Sunshine after a rain shower
........c. Compassion
...............i. Unbound
......................1. a distant horizon
......................2. an edgeless ocean
...............ii. Inherent
......................1. geese flying north
......................2. bark on a tree
..............iii. Necessity
......................1. a breath of air after a long swim
.......................2. a sapling growing up

II. Spirit
.......a. Timidity
................i. A startled deer
...............ii. An injured child

.......b. Affection
................i. Simplicity
.......................1. a child picking daisies for mother
..............ii. steadfastness
........................1. a boulder in a raging stream
.......................2. evergreen in wintertime
........c. Anger
...............i. Suddenness
......................1. a flash of lightning
.................ii. destructiveness
......................1. a raging forest fire
......................2. a tidal wave

III. Body
.......a. Eyes
.................i. Color
........................1. dancing sunlight
.......................2. swirling water
........................3. a rainbow
..............ii. depth
......................1. a cool forest
................iii. knowledge
.......................1. an old owl
......................2. an ancient star

It made sense to me. Uh, I believe your soul is more of your emotions, wile your spirit is your personality. Some things carry over into both categories.

I really don't know the difference between Spirit and Soul either--but what Shawn said makes sense

Oh--by the way--the outline form looks nice and simple. But why use periods? Why not indents? I think that makes it easier to read.

I did use indents. Indents don't copy to the forums.

Nooooooooo! God has not given us a spirit of timidity!

Anyways... I still don't understand why everybody doesn't just describe them in paragraph but I think this way looks less like a computer language and more like an outline.

Actually, there is a way to indent somewhere... :?

EDIT: Aha! I found it:

Actually, Shawn, even though I wrote that, Jay made it easier for us now. Thought putting [entity] tags around it still works (I think...Jay?), now you can just use an
Code:
[e]
tag. So it's a lot shorter now =D

You'd basically use this:

Code:
[e]emsp[/e]

And that's an indent! =D

Love the new map! :D
I think my favorite line is "steadfastness of affection like a boulder in a raging stream" that's pretty firm!

I think it's very readable, though I'll agree that indents would look smoother.

Regarding the spirit/soul issue I heard it put this way:

Plants have a body.
Animals have a body and a soul.
People have a body, a soul and a spirit.

Meaning that plants have a physical manifestation of their existence. (body)
Animals have a body plus personality! (soul)
People have both a body and personality AND the ability to have a relationship with God. (spirit)

Not something you can point to a chapter and verse on,
but a helpful way to differentiate between the terms. :)

For mapping purposes that would mean I'd put anything to do with their personality under SOUL
(introvert/extrovert, bossiness, insecurity, quirkiness, etc) and I'd put anything to do with their relationship to God under SPIRIT.
(saved/unsaved, trusting/suspicious of God, growing/stagnating, the impact of their faith, etc.)
I used BODY, SOUL and SPIRIT as my three main categories with my map of Russel if you'd like to see an example.

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

All the things that have deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear... We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want . . . which we shall still desire on our deathbeds . . . ~C.S. Lewis

I agree on the indents. I also think the text is very readable, not chaotic at all, and would be easily understood for those who struggle with the essence mapping. It is simpler too, since most of us have grown up having to write outlines.

I also agree with Mama Raven. :D

Yes, that was very well summed up, White Raven. Thank you. :)

Melody Kondrael posed the Spirit/Soul question in this thread. This was Jay's response.
Quote:
There are tons of different 'inner parts' to us. People have tried to define them in a dizzying array of often contradictory ways. It is a hard task.

There are also the Reins (in Hebrew it is the same word as 'kidneys'): which is more or less the throne of your decisions: your axioms and your assumptions.

There is your Heart: your meditator, the treasure where you store up good and bad things, where you draw from to provide strength in your actions.

There is your Brain: your physical thinker, when you memorize Scripture, you are not hiding it in your heart (you need to meditate on it to do that), you are storing it in your Brain. This is good, and very important, but not the same as meditating.

There is your Persona, or Personality: your makeup of emotional, physical, and mental (brain) preferences.

The difference between your Soul and Spirit is hard to define, because each has multiple meanings and uses, some of which overlap.

But there is your Nephesh life: you are alive. Animals have this too.

There is your individual Spirit: which goes to heaven and receives a glorified Body.

There are also terms which refer to two or more of these working in combination., such as your Will: the combination of your Heart and Reins.

That is the best I can do off the top of my head. :)

In a pm I asked how to apply this to essence mapping and his advice was that since there are so many confusing delineations of the "inner parts" to use the ones that best suit the needs of your essence map.
