Flag making. Coats of arms. Emblems. Insignias. Shields, signet rings, and hidden symbols.

Heraldry is something I'm interested in, but have only pursued a little. I know most of the sybolisms in colors, but that's about it. Since I can't draw I don't do much in the way of emblems and such, although sometimes, if I think really hard, I can tell you the meaning of a coat of arms. I designed a flag for my father for Christmas last year and worked out the symbology of every last minute detail and felt very proud of myself, but I've done nothing else.

So, maybe this should be in General Development, but are there any other students of heraldry out there?

Well, I'm not a student, but I sure try to come up with cool flags for my nations. I haven't really ever finished a coat of arms for any of them though....I haven't really looked into that aspect of heraldry.

You're supposed to talk about it. Not just say "I am" and disapear.

Well, I can talk about it some...maybe. What do you want to talk about, Katerina? ;) As far as meaning of flags, has anyone else come up with flags that have meaning? For my countries, I tried to come up with flags that were like a micro essence-map of that country...a first impression and a hidden meaning that told you something about the country.

For example, the flag of Tarbiyaan's got a red x on a tan backgroud, with a thick white border around the X. To me, this sets a precedent of a very bold and striking people/nation, who will do what they must. Few colors tell me that they are simple, and maybe modest. But then there's a hidden meaning as well. The tan represents the desert, and the four lines represent the four warlords of Tarbiyaan carving a path of blood through the world to unite in the middle as one unbreakable whole that will then go on to take over everything (They're such a friendly bunch, aren't they ;))

So, who wants to go next? Katerina? Varon? Airanna? Freddy?

Well, did I explain my flag? I have eleven white stars surrounding one gold star on a blue background. Blue stands for nobility and honor; white stands for purity. Eleven is the number of people in my family. Gold means light and wisdom and the one gold star represents god. The white stars surround the gold indicating their service.

Wow...that's pretty cool. For some reason I'm reminded of Joseph's dreams with the sun and the moon and the sheaves of grain.

Well, Gellentara's flag is a long white triangular flag with a red sun rising over the peaks of Mt. Anor, with the sun inside the triangle between the two. This scene represents the return of Lyrianur in darkest hour of the War of Reckoning after Malxor, once Azizen, murdered Lyrianur and attempted to rule Edradria.

Very interesting Varon. :D How detailed is the picture of Mt. Anor/the sun on the flag? Have you drawn it yet?

Thank you. I've drawn it, but it isn't very detailed.

In my latest chapter an E'eldradin (elven) prince wears a long coat with a roa'an (elk like animal and a mount) head over a silver, red tipped sword. A symbol of the Forever Lands E'eld, and their loyalty to Jandrous, The One True King. :D

Pardon, Jaynin, but that background looks purple to me. :)

I'm not especially involved with the particulars of heraldry, but I did design a flag for both of my opposing nations. Andun's flag is a bit more complicated and I shall not attempt a graphic at the moment. ;)

Carseld's flag consists of a dark blue background with a circular orange knot in the center:

The knot symbolizes Quintor's (God's) eternal reign. Blue stands for Justice, which is highly valued in Carseld. Thoughts? ;)

Okay, so I just realized I never posted the Dunndarian symbol in this thread! My mind is slipping apparently. Here is the symbol emblazoned across the chests of the Dunndarian soldier's uniforms, and just about everything else of Dunndars.
