Trevelian: Aye, but the swamp is bigger, and they are made to be disguised when in it.

Tristram: *nods* Scaleback care is similar, though of course different in its own ways.

Garan: *nods* Yestin couldn't cook to save his life either.

Yestin: *looks casually toward the head of the table to make sure his mother and grandmother are not looking his way, then flicks a piece of cheese at Garan*

Orrun: *smiles, amused*

Hakor: *grins and takes from some of the dishes* *watches Iola open the crayfish and copies her* *looks at it and the knife for a second, then eats with his fingers*

Rousen: Ah... then how are the babies so easy to find? *to Tristram* *nods* Horses don't eat fish, like baryonix seem to. Horses eat grass and grain.

Tesmir: Rune's cooking is pretty tasty. He and Orrun together... we feast.

Orrun:

Sulwyn: Do you like it here?

Iola: They're hard to eat, but they're the tastiest. *smiles*

Trevelian: We bait them. The young live nearer to solid earth and are always willing to take an easy meal.

Tristram: *nods* That much I have learned from trade partners, but we do not have many horses in this region.

Braith: *listens to the talk about horses*

Garan: *grins*

Orrun: *nods* I do. It's very nice here. It's a lot more open than the city is, so not as noisy.

Hakor: They are good. *takes another bite*

Rousen: *nods* That makes sense. *to Tristram* Why don't you have horses here?

Tesmir: *glances toward the head of the tabke to see if anyone saw Yestin throwing cheese*

Kedmir: *looks at Aderyn* Do you help bait or catch the young mounts?

Sulwyn: *very very carefully picks up her knife and tries gently to cut her food*

Iola: You don't have a lot of fish to eat?

Trevelian: *goes back to eating*

Tristram: Horses live in the west, so they only come across the river far south of us and are used more often there. The scalebacks make them uncomfortable, so they have not been used often in Etana.

Yestin: *grins*

Garan: *eats his food but looks to be up to something*

Aderyn: *sips her wine and shakes her head* Oh no. They take a lot of manpower to bring in. I can help to break them, but that requires willpower, which I can better provide.

Orrun: Would you like some help?

Hakor: *shakes his head* Not usually. It's takes a lot to have it transported from port cities to anywhere else, so sometimes it isn't worth transporting in case they go bad. Any fish our city does get is usually expensive. If we have fish, we usually make it a day trip the port.

Rousen: *nods* Why do horses make them uncomfortable?

Tesmir: *looks between the twins, trying to figure out what just happened and how it happened without adult observation*

Kedmir: *nods* How are they broken?

Sulwyn: *nodnod* Yes please.

Iola: Fish from the sea? Ours come from the rivers and swamp. Trevelian and Aderyn have had sea fish before though. They say it is salty.

Tristram: Oh, they are not distressed in the presence of horses, rather horses seem distressed by the scalebacks.

*Yestin and Garan have gone back to eating*

Aderyn: Very carefully... They are held down and saddled, and then taught to understand commands with a rider on their backs and men holding them from getting loose or upset. I've been the rider. *smiles proudly*

Orrun: What would you like cut?

Hakor: *nods* It is, but it's tasty. Tilmere took us to the port city Balmarren once. We used to live there, and we visited all the places we could remember, and had fish for supper.

Rousen: How come? Just because the scalebacks are bigger?

Tesmir: *continues eating, watching the twins curiously*

Kedmir: *grins* Do they run about and try to shake you off like horses do?

Tilmere: *looks at Lyneth* Which scale back is your favorite? Eguiterma or baryonix?

Sulwyn: *points to her meat*

Iola: You used to live by the sea? What was it like?

Tristram: I believe so. I have little experience with horses to know for certain.

Braith:*smiles to herself* I saw a horse once...

Yestin: *to the Annors nearest to him, in general* So what is it that you do for trade?

Aderyn: They would if they were free to, but the men keep them well secured, and we riders hardly give them any more. They are quick to learn, as the eagles are, that they are well off with us to feed them.

Lyneth: Ausma...

Orrun: *cuts her meat into manageable pieces for her* How is that?

Hakor: *nods* I was too young to remember much when we lived there. Bit Kedmir says it smells fresh, and wet. And sometimes of fish. The water's cold and bitter, too. Tilmere said I hated even touching the sand or the water whenever we went to the water.

Rousen: *nods* *opens his mouth to say more, but Tilmere gives him a look that says "let him eat in peace."* *is slightly subdued* *looks at Braith* You did? What do horses here look like?

Tilmere: *gives up*

Hakor: *to Yestin* Trade? *looks thoughtful* Well... Us specifically, we don't do much trade, except with coin. We all have different areas of work. Like Rune sometimes helps train soldiers, Tesmir runs errands for shopkeepers, and Orrun works in the stables.

Tesmir: When we lived by the ocean, our father had a trade business with the other countries. He would transport materials or produce for Piensorite merchants overseas.

Kedmir: *nods* So they're held still until they realize things aren't as bad as they thought?

Tilmere: *smiles* Ah. And I believe I heard your papa say that Madam Ausma is the oldest, aye? Do you enjoy riding her?

Sulwyn: Thank you. *eats her food with her fingers*

Iola: Trevelian and Aderyn have been to the sea. We never lived there though. We've lived at Newlveld since Ta's tad-gu started taming scalebacks, and that was before we were born.

Braith: It was from a distance, so I cannot say how reliable my account is. It's legs were all the same length, as a deer has them, but it was much more stocky and muscular in appearance... It's neck was thicker, and it had no antlers or horns, and it's face was longer, with a pronounced snout. It was covered in fur as a deer is as well.

Yestin: Ah, I see. What is it that you do?

Garan: For what sorts of materials do you trade?

Aderyn: I suppose so, yes.

Lyneth: *nods shyly*

Orrun: You're welcome. *continues eating, attempting to open his crayfish*

Hakor: *nods* That sounds like a long time ago. Why did Trevelian and Aderyn go to the sea?

Rousen: *nods* Horses here sound similar to ones in Piensor. But... what was a horse doing out here, if they aren't used around here?

Hakor: *grins* I help the local butcher. He's a good man, but it's hard sometimes to kill animals. So I usually just help with cutting and preparing the meat.

Tesmir: *frowns* I'm not sure. *thinks* I was only a baby then, but I think my father would trade for whatever merchants in Luminne or Ainran have to transport. Foods, fabrics or clothes already made, tools or weapons sometimes... anything a merchant had for transporting and could pay for the space his stock took up. Then my father would have someone sell the items and the money would go to the merchant... I think that's how Rune described it, anyway.

Kedmir: Do the young scalebacks ever manage to escape when you are breaking them?

Tilmere: *smiles* Do you ride her with someone else sometimes?

Sulwyn: *points across the table* No, like 'ola does it.

Iola: *is expertly prying her crayfish apart with her knife and picking the meat out with her fingers, or sucking it out of the legs and claws* Aye, many decades. Trevelian and Aderyn like to travel and explore. They have ridden through many parts of the Cubbadryt on their own. Sometimes they go off for days or a week before they come home. They always bring stories, and sometimes they have songs that the people of the wood have taught them. The people in the North live in small tribes and travel a great deal. Aderyn says some of them are odd, but that they are usually friendly and share things with them and let them stay by their fires. The sea is up there too, so Aderyn and Trevelian have gone there. They brought shells and stones back with them.

Braith: It had a rider who, I expect by his direction, was bearing toward Etana. I was not in town then, so I could not see it closer. It must have been that he had some message to deliver or errand to see completed that could not be done in Zuna. Father did not see the man, so I did not learn of his business.

Yestin: What is the livestock that you most often work with?

Garan: Are animals often transported across the ocean?

Aderyn: They don't seem to think of it often. It is more likely that they will attempt to escape back into a stall. When they are threatened, they prefer to hide if they can, unless they are cornered. Then they may try to strike or lash out. The men are careful though. They know how to have the beasts secured so they cannot hurt anyone.

Lyneth: *nods and eats her food*

Orrun: *watches Iola, then opens his crayfish like she does and tries some* I've never had this before.

Hakor: *grins* Do you like exploring? At least around here?

Rousen: *nods* That makes sense... Where is Zuna?

Hakor: Usually, I see a lot of goats and swine. Occasionally sheep, but not many, unless they're brought from Ainran. Cattle are found further south, where there's more open land.

Tesmir: *thinks* I'm not sure... Oh! I think so! I remember Rune said that our father brought home a bird for our mother, before Orrun was even born. It was like an owl, but all yellow with black markings. I don't know how often live animals are transported, though... furs and meat probably are. It would be kind of hard to transport them, wouldn't it?

Kedmir: *nods* So they aren't the bravest of creatures?

Tilmere: *smiles, but says nothing more*

Sulwyn: Not ever?

Iola: Yes. Do you?

Braith: Zuna is the region south of the river. We are in Cargan now.

Yestin: *nods and listens*

Garan: It must be. Hogs and sheep are traded along the river by barge, but we have not seen trade over an ocean before.

Aderyn: No, thankfully. They are obedient though.

Blodwyn: She means no ill will, she is only shy.

Orrun: *shakes his head* No. But it's very good.

Hakor: *nods* I enjoy exploring the city. Sometimes I'll go out with Tesmir or Jek early in the morning and sneak about, exploring all the little alleys and streets before anyone else is awake.

Rousen: *nods* Have you been to Zuna?

Hakor: Although some people have actually tried to have us do Teimaro. I don't know what for, but the butcher turns them away, since there's no safe meat to be had from those even if one could stomach the the thought of eating one.

Tilmere: *glances at Hakor like "that isn't a topic for the table."*

Tesmir: How big is a barge? *tries to think* I've heard of horses being transported, though. I heard a man at the tavern once who said his horse came from Luminne.

Kedmir: *nods* They sound easier to handle than horses. Sometimes horses have a mind of their own.

Tilmere: *nods, smiling* I understand. There was a time when I was shy of strangers when I was younger.

Sulwyn: D'you have a favorite?

Iola: Oooh, I love the feel in the air just before the sun is up. What is the city like then?

Braith: I have not been, no. Father has trade with merchants in Zuna, so he has gone to them before in Jabil and Cascata, and once to Zenia.

Garan: What is a Teimaro?

Yestin: Oh, barges vary in size. They are flat river boats that can haul a great deal of cargo. Animals can be packed into them as easily as they can be into a cart. There is some room for a man or two as well.

Aderyn: *smiles* You have ridden them; how did you find it?

Lyneth: *watches Tilmere*

Blodwyn: Aye, Trevelian and Garan were often the same when they were small.

Orrun: Hmm... I like the fish.

Hakor: *grins* Very quiet, almost like no one lives there. There are some people who are already awake and getting shops ready, but the streets and the square are empty. It doesn't smell as fresh as the open air, but find the right time to be around the baker's, and the air will smell like hot bread and pastries.

Rousen: What does your father trade?

Hakor: Teimaro... they're dangerous. They have green skin, black teeth, and are a bit smaller than a dog. They live in the forest, and tend to hunt in packs, man or beast.

Tesmir: *grins* That sounds fun. Is it hard keeping the animals in one place? What if one of them spooks? *takes a bite of fish and a sip of the wine*

Kedmir: *thinks* Eguiterma seem fairly easy once I got used to the feel of it... Baryonix, not so much. It was more difficult to handle the baryonix than it was a horse.

Tilmere: *smiles* *winks at Lyneth* But being shy doesn't keep us from the little adventures we find, aye?

Sulwyn: Fish is your favorite food?

Iola: I wish I could see it. *nods* Nain is always up early to make sure the bread is being made properly. *butters a piece of bread for herself*

Braith: Many things. Iron, livestock, crops, and the work the animals do. There are many more farms in Zuna, so they favor iron.

Garan: Sounds like Yestin in the morning.

Yestin: *throws another piece of cheese at Garan*

Tristram: *clears his throat from the head of the table and raises his eyebrow*

Yestin: *occupies himself with his food*

Garan: *answers Tesmir* Most livestock is used to a herd, so they won't panic if there is no reason.

Aderyn: I'll let you know which is the more difficult when I have ridden a horse.

Lyneth: *still looks shy, but then shakes her head*

Orrun: *realizes* Oh, you mean overall? *thinks* I enjoy goat very much.

Hakor: Maybe if you come visit, we'll get up really early and explore the city.

Rousen: *nods* You have a good trade business going.

Tesmir: *glances up at Tristram, then back at the twins* o.o *looks at Garan* Oh. They don't get nervous about going over water?

Kedmir: *grins* Perhaps we can race them.

Tilmere: *smiles* I think being a little shy during an adventure helps us see things other might not. That way we can help our more eager mischief-making companions.

Sulwyn: Fish and goat are good.

Iola: That sounds nice. *thinks* Is there very much to see if all of the shops are closed?

Braith: *smiles* Some of the best in Cargan, if I understand correctly.

Garan: I don't believe so... though I do not know that they can see that they are on water to know.

Aderyn: *laughs* Aye, that would be fun.

Lyneth: *shakes her head* I want to stay here...

Orrun: They are. I haven't had fish in a long time, but I'm glad I still enjoy it.

Hakor: Sometimes, through the windows.

Rousen: *smiles* What kind of people does your father do business with most?

Tesmir: They don't? Are they below decks?

Kedmir: *grins* I won't lose then.

Tilmere: *nods* Of course. But adventure is always to be had close to home, as well. Even indoors. I know I and my brothers have found ourselves in many quests within doors.

Sulwyn: *nods* Fish is good too. *eats along, happily*

Iola: Oooh, like in the winter, when the snow and the wind are about at night, but the firelight flickers warmly inside. I love watching that. Then coming into the warmth where Ma has made something nice.

Braith: He does the most business with the other men who own mines. The eguiterma are the best method for hauling the ore.

Garan: Barges and river boats seldom have a below deck. They are larger than a rowboat, to be certain, but not so large as sea ships are, from what I understand.

Aderyn: You could still win on the baryonyx, they only take some practice.

(She's wrong. She would always win on a baryonyx. )

Lyneth: *nods* ...I just like the house and the flowers...

Orrun: *nods* It is. *continues eating*

Hakor: *smiles* Aye, just like that.

Tilmere: *overhears, and smiles faintly*

Rousen: I see. He rents them out to the miners?

Tesmir: Oh... then how to the animals know they're not on water?

Kedmir: Mmhm. And one who does enjoy my company.

Tilmere: Aye, they are very nice. Do you help plant the flowers?

Sulwyn: *holds up a a strawberry* D'you like these?

Iola: *smiles and butters a piece of bread* Do you like the winter, or do you prefer the summer?

Braith: Yes. Keeping animals is a rather profitable business. Their specific care and handling can be costly, but that only makes them the more valuable, and the more difficult to steal.

Garan: I suppose they do not think of it. When they are packed into a barge, they can't see over the sides much at all.

Aderyn: *chuckles* Humans grow on them over time.

Iola: *shakes her head* They just grow.

Orrun: *looks at the strawberry curiously* I don't think so... what is it? *takes a strawberry from a nearby dish and examines it*

Hakor: *thinks* I like the summer best. I'm always busy, and I can be outdoors more often, even out of the city. What about you?

Rousen: *nods* Do you enjoy riding the scalebacks?

Tesmir: Ohhh. I understand now. How many can you fit onto a barge?

Kedmir: *laughs* Even foreign ones?

Tilmere: Ahh. Wild fairies, my mother would call them.

Sulwyn: It's a berry! *pulls the greens off and eats the strawberry*

(They're a bit smaller than the strawberries you buy, but redder.)

Iola: I loove the harvest season. There is so much bustle, and the smells are wonderful, and we get to eat all of the best food right after it's been brought in, and there are always apples, and the city is lively with new traders and entertainers that weren't there before. *grins excitedly and eats with a bright smile*

Braith: It is nice to have them for riding, show a journey be too long on foot, but I prefer walking. I have not yet ridden a horse to know which I prefer to ride.

Garan: *shrugs* Depends on the barge, depends on the animal. *eats his meat*

Aderyn: All humans are foreign to them.

Lyneth: *smiles* The flowers?

Orrun: A berry? *looks at it, then removes the greens and takes a bite* .... I like it.

Hakor: *listens as he eats, his smile growing wider as Iola speaks and as she gets excited* That sounds like a lot of fun. I don't think my home has that much fun at harvest time.

Rousen: *nods* I've recently preferred walking to riding, too. Seems a little safer. *says this with a slightly amused tone*

Tesmir: *nods, and continues eating, looking like his mind is whirring with thoughts*

Kedmir: *nods* Sometimes I feel the same way.

Rousen: *looks at him with a *

Tilmere: Aye. They like to grow in the open fields and forests, in all colors. From far away, even a small field of them look like there are fairies playing in the grass. And up close, the blossoms are small enough to be the size of fairies, but in disguise.

Sulwyn: D'you like cheeeese? *gives him a piece of her cheese*

Iola: *furrows her brow* Why is that?

Braith: Is it then dangerous to ride horses?

Yestin: Do you do much fishing?

Aderyn: *sounds as though she is in earnest* There is room in the barn... if you would prefer...

Lyneth: *nods*

Orrun: *accepts the cheese* Now cheese I have had. *takes a bite*

Hakor: *shrugs* We don't get the traveling performers. We have some fun things, like a dance or two.

Rousen: Not particularly dangerous, no, as long as you know what you're doing. Horses are usually mild tempered when handled right. Sometimes you can find a horse with spirit, but those are like your baryonix. They need a firm hand.

Tesmir: Some. Rousen and I have gone mostly in the summer. But it's usually been to sell what we catch. But sometimes we keep the fish.

Kedmir: No, I meant... I didn't mean-- *looks flustered*

Tilmere: *smiles* Are there many wild fairies around your house?

Sulwyn: Is cheese good?

Iola: Good. Do you get apples?

Braith: Oh, I see. I myself tend to prefer walking if I cannot ride a level-headed beast.

Yestin: *nods* In rivers, aye?

Aderyn: *tries to hide a grin, but laughs a little*

Lyneth: There're butterflies...

Orrun: *nods* It is good. Do you like cheese?

Hakor: Occasionally, the orchard is a bit too far for us to travel to and help, but the apples come in eventually and we're able to buy some.

Rousen: *nods* So between the two, you would prefer an eguiterma to a baryonix?

Tesmir: Aye. The river is a fair distance away, but we always make it fun when we go out there.

Kedmir: *looks at her, confused, but then realizes she's teasing*

Tilmere: *smiles* Ah, aye. Do you like the butterflies?

Sulwyn: *nods as she eats it*

Iola: We do a great deal with apples, come harvest. There is some in here too. *takes a piece of ham and apple pie*

Braith: Yes, but I do prefer to be on the ground, more so.

Yestin: Do you not have other creeks from which to fish?

Aderyn: Unless you would prefer the wilds were there are very few humans at all.

Lyneth: *nods*

Orrun: *folds a piece of cheese around a piece if meat and eats it*

Hakor: *grins* Pastries with apples are always delicious.

Rousen: *nods* It's easier to control your own two feet than four of someone else's.

Tesmir: Not really. If there is one, it's in the forest. Since it's easier to head straight for the river, we just go there.

Kedmir: *chuckles* I get enough wild from my brothers.

Tilmere: Now, if I'm not mistaken, butterflies come in all colors and sizes, aye? Do you have a favorite?

Sulwyn: *takes a drink*

Iola: Do you have berries?

Braith: It is also more relaxed to go for a stroll than a ride, in my opinion.

Yestin: *nods* I see.

Aderyn: I believe I can commiserate.

Lyneth: The ones with spots...

Orrun: What is your least favorite food?

Hakor: *nods* Aye, we have those. Sometimes we'll go out to the forest and gather them. There's a man in the city who makes really delicious pastries out of berries.

Rousen: *nods* Gives you time to think without having to think about controlling the mount.

Tesmir: But we also swim there too. That's where I learned to swim, and the twins. Sometimes in the summer Tilmere will send us all out there to swim for a while.

Kedmir: There are days when they make you think you're the only tame one in the house.

Tilmere: Those sound lovely. What colors are they?

Sulwyn: Crickets.

Iola: Oh, good. Berries are as much fun as apples when you can pick them yourself.

Braith: That is just what I think.

Yestin: What is the climate like there?

Aderyn: And that is what riding and kettling is for. *smiles*

Lyneth: Gray and yellow.

Orrun: *stares at her, trying to figure out if she's teasing or not* ....crickets?

Hakor: *nods* Although we tend to eat more than we carry home.

Rousen: *smiles and continues eating* Do you have any favorite walking haunts?

Tesmir: Summers can be hot, even when it rains. It feels very dry when we haven't had rain in a long time, so everything smells like it's cooking.

Kedmir: *grins* Aye. We may not be able to tame siblings, but some creatures will listen to reason.

Tilmere: *smiles* Those ones sound lovely. Are they big or small?

Sulwyn: *nods*

Iola: *laughs* That's what berries are for.

Braith: I prefer the fields where I can see very far and watch the wind ripple the crops and the grasses. There is too much happening in the forest to see any such thing.

Yestin: Do you get snow? A great deal of the southern land does not.

Aderyn: Brothers and sisters only need a different sort of handling.

Lyneth: Some are both.

Orrun: You eat them?

Hakor: *grins* True. But then we don't have many for delicious desserts, or for breakfast.

Rousen: *smiles* You make it sound very peaceful and relaxing.

Tesmir: *nods* We do. Not a whole lot, at least not in the city, but we get enough to throw at each other.

Kedmir: They do. But sometimes the temptation to use other means is just too strong...

Tilmere: Are they? What kind of flowers do they like best?

Sulwyn: No. They're all hoppy.

Iola: You have berries for breakfast?

Braith: For me, it is exactly so. The sound of the wind is very soothing and lonely, and the grasses ripple like water when the wind strokes them.

Yestin: *smiles and nods*

Garan: Does your land have harvests all year round?

Aderyn: What sorts of methods?

Lyneth: I don't know...

Orrun: But you said they were your least favorite food...?

Hakor: Sometimes. We usually put it into our breakfast for flavor.

Rousen: *smiles at the image*

Tesmir: No, only before it gets cold. Sometimes though people will plant things that can grow in the cold weather, but it's never usually as big as the autumn harvests are.

Kedmir: *smiles* Tricks and mischief. Let them know you are not above their own ways to counter their mischief. Only it must be done in such a way that it lets them know you can play at their game, too.

Tilmere: *nods* Well... if you were a butterfly, what flower would you like best?

Sulwyn: I don't like them.

Iola: We never did that... *looks thoughtful*

Braith: *smiles* Do you also prefer field to forest?

Garan: Peas and melons, I imagine.

Aderyn: *smiles and eats her food*

Lyneth: But I'm not a butterfly...

Orrun: Oh. Why don't you like them? They make pretty sounds, almost like birds.

Hakor: Never? What are breakfasts usually like here?

Tesmir: Maybe. I've never really paid attention.

Hakor: Only because you don't like peas.

Tesmir: =_= I can pay attention to them if I want, not because of personal preference to them when eating them.

Kedmir: *continues eating*

Tilmere: True... well, what is your favorite flower?

Sulwyn: I don't want to eat them!

Iola: Bread and sausage, porridge, and sometimes eggs. Do you have little cups to put your eggs in?

Garan: How do you manage that? Don't you notice when certain foods are plentiful in the market?

Yestin: Garan, he doesn't live as near the fields as we.

Aderyn: *helps herself to some crayfish*

Lyneth: I like the corncockles.

Orrun: But you said they were your least favorite food...? Do people eat them?

Hakor: That sounds delicious. *shakes his head* No. We just use plates. Do you use cups?

Tesmir: *shrugs* Not really. I'm not in charge of buying food. I tag along sometimes, but it's boring just standing around waiting for Ked or someone to barter and haggle.

Kedmir: *to Aderyn* So what is a typical day like around here for you?

Tilmere: *smiles* What do corncockles look like?

Sulwyn: Noooo. D'you climb trees?

Iola: For the eggs, we do. Braith has learned to decorate them with paint.

Yestin: *raises an annoyed brow and eats his food*

Garan: *laughs quietly*

Aderyn: That depends rather heavily on the day. They may have any range of work or diversion by the different seasons and events.

Lyneth: They're purple and little and have five petals.

Orrun: Oh. *nods* Sometimes. There aren't many trees in town, so my brothers and I go to the forest to climb those ones.

Hakor: Has she? I didn't know eggs could be painted.

Tesmir: What? *looks at them*

Kedmir: Alright... mid-winter, no celebrations? What is a day like for you then?

Tilmere: They sound lovely. Are they wild flowers, or do you plant them?

Sulwyn: Are they big treeees?

Iola: *giggles* Oh, no, I mean the cups.

Yestin: You find bargaining dull?

Garan: *shakes his head at his brother and eats his food*
