I have cut this clip out of the glossary that I am making for my book.

Dains: (pronounced DANES) The Dains are like elementals. They are people from the different races who have control over an element. There are Fire Dains, Water Dains, Earth Dains, Air Dains, Tree Dains, Wild Dains, Sea Dains, etc. Some are prophets, and whatever kind of Dain they are, that’s where they live, and they cannot be harmed by that thing. Some in the sea, some with trees, some can fly, some live in the fires of the earth. Dains are extremely hard to be found, unless they are young Dains who are not yet used to being shunned by most people, due to their appearance. Their physical aspects are very like their element and tells what kind of Dain they are, and their eyes also have slit pupils. Some people realize the value of Dains and try to find them. They are rarely lucky. Normally, it is someone rich whose adviser, etc. has suggested they have a Dain in their services, and so Dains are becoming more popular with slavers. Singular: Dain.

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

All the things that have deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear... We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want . . . which we shall still desire on our deathbeds . . . ~C.S. Lewis

:D Thanks, guys. Dains are some of my favorites (especially since they came from a dream I had). I even have one in my first book.

Woooooowwwww.......
Two questions, how sentient are they and are they inherently good or evil?
I've never had inspiration come from a dream.

They look like whatever race they are (elf, human, etc.) with hints of their "element" (i.e., a human fire dain might have flaming red hair and bright orange/red/golden eyes, ruddy complexion, etc.) Yes, there are wind dains. They are very wispy things, and few of them live very long.

Wait, so are Dains people, elves, etc. who have been changed or are they a separate race?

Kind of the former. They are not a different race, but rather, someone born with an uncommon genetic make up. I would compare it to dyslexia. Dyslexia has been labeled a "learning disorder" but really, it's an improvement. Dyslexic people take in information at a rate ten times faster than anyone else (in my opinion, this constitutes potential genius). Dains are kind of like that. They are still human, elf, etc. but with a rare ability, if that makes any sense.

It makes perfect sense, only it makes another question. If a person becomes a dain and marries another dain, is the child a dain?

There is a better chance for it, but it's not guaranteed.

Awesome! I'd follow Mindy's example, but that's already been done :D.

This is highly creative, it's one of your best ideas yet! Love it!
