Another clip from my glossary.

Lith: The lith are lights that float around and, sometimes, lead travelers astray. Some believe they are spirits, but they are actually beings. Some are mischievous, but many are benevolent. They have often led those who are lost back to the path. Most of them, though unable to see the exact future, have feelings that something is supposed to be. They can speak, though few humans know it. And they can be captured, for the piskies use them in their lanterns. Singular: Lithe.

fascinating! Are they kind of patterned after will-o-th'wisps? And do they have bodies? And what does their voice sound like?

Are they just gleaming orbs? What do they live off of?

Ooooo that's creepiness itself!

Sounds to me like you wouldn't want to follow any of them
unless your situation was otherwise hopeless!

I like that you made them beings and not spirits.
I think there are lots of things that we still don't understand
in our own world and it only makes sense
that there would be mysteries in fantasy worlds as well.

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

All the things that have deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear... We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want . . . which we shall still desire on our deathbeds . . . ~C.S. Lewis

Yes! I love the idea of will-o-the-wisps, but I wanted something else, something that fit my world. No, they don't have bodies (I hate to refer to the Original Star Trek series and their many energy beings, but it is something like that, only I don't think it's energy.) As far as I and anyone else knows, they are just gleaming orbs. And, I don't know what they live off of. I haven't really thought it out that far.

Thank you, Raven! Yes, your last paragraph is exactly how I mean it to be. There are a lot of things in my world that do not have explanations, because we don't have to know everything (and we probably shouldn't, anyway). Lith's are one of those hard-to-understand-and-explain phenomenons, I think partially because they are sentient beings, and can decide what to make known about themselves.

Thank you, both, for reading my posts!

For them to live off something.....hmm...Maybe something in the air; oh I think sunlight would be appropriate.

What happens if you catch one? Are they capable of violence?

No, actually, they aren't violent. However, it is 1) incredibly difficult to catch one and 2) even harder to keep one (they're basically little balls of light).

However, it is possible to befriend them (I haven't figured out the process yet). But a main-character-who-is-not-in-the-book befriended one in the past and asked it to reside inside a pendant for several years, which it has.

So they can inhabit solid matter?

Yes. They're not exactly physical. (For an explanation, read the too-long paragraph below. Otherwise, skip it.)

It gets kind of complicated, but it has to do with the two separate...dimensions (?) of my world, the physical and the non-physical. They have different names, but that's basically what they are. The physical realm is the one inhabited by humans, elves, cats, dogs, etc. The non-physical is the realm inhabited by some kinds of demons, certain angels, and certain other creatures. Sometimes, however, the creatures that belong in one dimension will end up in the other. Thus, the presence of lith in the physical world. They are not supposed to be in this world, which is why they seem so odd and are not constrained by solid matter as we are. I hope that makes some sense. Sorry for the length.

I think I see, but does that mean they have a different form in the other dimension?
