For my metaphorical rendition of the Almighty, I crafted the name "Eliam." It was inspired by studying the many, many, many ancient names and titles for Jehovah. Many of these names began with the word "El" (El-Shaddai, El-yon, and even God's personal name El-ohim). It means literally "god," "deity," or "almighty." Notice I did not capitalize "god." That's because "El" is more of a title than a name. However, it is personalized with whatever word follows it. So now I needed to find a way to characterize the title "almighty" with a personal name that reflected my Savior. To do this, I merely asked God, "Who are you?" And as God responded to Moses when he asked the same question, "I am that I am" (Exodus 3:14). So who is God? He is the almighty I am -- El-I-am --- Eliam!

You might try following a similar method. It's great fun and you learn how to properly address the LORD of creation :D .

Deo Volente,
Pavalini

Something that I learned from my pastor that I hadn't known before was that LORD is actually translated to Jehovah! I thought that was pretty cool :)

Pavalini: that is really cool! I could have looked through one of my books that I did for school to find one, but I couldn't find the book. :) I do enjoy reading the names of God though. There are so many of them that are so beautiful, and others that are so strong or terrifying. He is such an amazing God and so deserving over every one of His names.

I believe Jehovah and Yahweh are transliterations of the Hebrew word usually translated LORD.

Oh, maybe that was it. Sorry. It was quite a few months ago so you are probably right. :)

Oh, I only heard it that one time, and apparently it didn't stick with me as well as I had thought :)

You may very well have heard Jehovah, Promised. I believe Jehovah and Yahweh are transliterations of the same Hebrew word. Yahweh is the one I see more often, but Jehovah is equally valid as far as I know.

Anyone ever used The Names of God by Joseph Stone? It's only a little book, but has a whole bunch of God's names as seen in the Bible. It's an interesting read even if you're not a writer

I've never heard of it. I should look for it seeing as how I am an avid writer :)

What fascinating ideas everyone has!! When it comes up in my stories, I've used "The Great One who Alone Is," or else "The Great One" or "The One." I did that for a couple of reasons - first, since I wanted to focus my creative naming juices on other things, and also because, as others mentioned, it's instantly recognizable that you're referring to God. Plus, it seems more memorable to me.

That's just my two cents. Keep up the great brainstorm, folks!

@Promised: It's a great little book :) (There's actually two more: the names of the Holy Spirit and the Names of Christ.) It covers 12 names of God and is really interesting. I highly recommend it :)

I was reading back through this, because I'm also searching for a name for God in my novel.

I noted that someone suggested 'Toviel'. Has anyone else used that, or could I possibly use it?

I'm using the name Eloé (eh-low-AY). It starts with El, like Elohim or Elyon, and for some reason it just fit.
