| Post subject: | Sofia Serrento's Spectacular Flying Circus |
A small band of women sit huddled around a small campfire beneath crystal clear stars and surrounded by the shadows they cast on the dim shapes of small airplanes circled behind them. A few tents stand perched not far away and a canvas banner ripples and flaps in the wind. Glass bottles rest on the ground beside them and sometimes, depending on how they move, firelight glitters off the cold gunmetal gray of a holstered handgun. One was an olive-skinned woman with black curly hair, clad in a brown pilot's coat buttoned up tight, SOFIA SERRENTO. Another was a strongly built Chinese woman in trousers and blouse, with the hilt of a sword at her side, XUAN LILI. Another was a glamorous American looking woman in expensive furs and satin, with a jauntily tilted beret, ASTORIA ARMOUR. Another American, in the green drab of the US Military Intelligence, sits at a table, examining a map, illuminated by oil lantern. On the horizon, across the vast grassland, a great light flashes across the savanna, momentarily illuminating everything as bright as day before dissipating again. Seconds later, a strange electrical buzz ripples past them. "Least we know we're in the right place," Sofia says as she stands, reaching for the binoculars on her belt. "Should be about time for those folks command told us about to be showing up too." |

I had been thinking trapeze artists, and that it would be interesting, but very different. I see now that this is definitely not just an escapade of acrobats and clowns! |

Yep! A flying circus was what they called a group of barnstormers and stunt pilots between the world wars. |

Oh, wow! I didn't know that! One of my grandpas was an air traffic controller, so it is always fun to hear about flying. |

Yep! We would call them air shows nowadays, I think. I made a thread for them here: viewtopic.php?f=194&t=10128 |

A lanky scientist--at least, that's the profession his oversized lab coat would suggest--sits back a few paces and watches in amusement, sipping tea that appears to have long since grown cold. Have it your way. |

SOFIA turns to inspect the lanky man in the lab coat and shrugs. "One of them specialists from Washington, I presume? That's who command said would be headed our way." The woman jerked a gloved thumb in the direction that the blinding flash and electrical buzz had come from. "Rumor has it that the Krauts got their hands on some of Tesla's old blueprints." |

The scientist laughs. "Got kicked out of Washington years ago. But Tesla, now that I know a few things about." He downs the last of his tea and walks over to extend his hand. "Dr. Nic, but the 'doctor' is optional." |

ASTORIA looks up and gives a snide smile, "Kicked from Washington? With Hitler's boys stirring up trouble, you might find a warmer welcome than you thought." She brushes her hair out of her face and adjusts the hat. "I was a jewel thief until Uncle Same needed my skills." SOFIA nods. "Well, Doc, good to see you arrived." She holds out a pair of binoculars. "Give us your assessment of that train. We think they supersized one of Tesla's death ray designs and mounted it on an armored train car." |

Dr. Nic grins, a genuinely amicable gesture. "I'm not above playing ally myself, if the compensation equals the effort." He accepts the binoculars and employs them for a solid minute. "'Super-sized' might be a bit generous of a term, as I've definitely seen bigger." He pauses to wipe the lenses off with his lab coat and takes another look. "But it's definitely Tesla technology, and it's definitely a decent weapon." |
