Hey all, I'm both enjoying my day off from work, and researching for a previously-mentioned smuggler / pirate story. I just thought y'all would enjoy some of my research. This website, http://www.thepirateking.com, in particular is awesome. There is a TON of information there, and much of it is explained better than I have ever read. Ranks on board a pirate ship: http://www.thepirateking.com/historical/ship_roles.htm Sailboat terms: http://sailing.about.com/od/introductiontosailing/a/Basic-Sailboat-Terms.htm United States Revenue Cutter Jackson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USRC_Jackson_%281832%29 |

And, just found another one: "The Pirate Ships: Being an overview of sorts on how to turn a 'sloop' into a 'pirate sloop'" http://pirates.hegewisch.net/ships_intro.html |

Oh... I guess the topic subscribing no longer works? Lady Katharina Mimetes wrote: Thank you for sharing, mborn! You're very welcome. Blayne B. Trent wrote: Ooooo! This is very helpful, thanks! Welcome. Are you by any chance writing a naval or pirate story? |

Some of these older history subjects are very hard to research. I've spent a lot of time studying, and almost bought several books for the same purpose. Let me know if you find some good articles. |

These are very helpful, especially for someone who is writing about pirates in their novel etc. Thanks for sharing, Mborn! |

More research! (Short story this time.) Here's a fantastic diagram of all the parts of a third-rate ship of the line: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iUV6tkdP_V4/U ... 2_edit.jpg Here's a ton of pictures of a model ship. The blog itself is pretty interesting, but these pictures are great. http://malaysiamodelship.blogspot.com/2 ... llery.html An interesting incident concerning a peaceful mutiny: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spithead_ ... e_mutinies And I named a ship in my story the "HMS Sandwich", because I think it's hilarious. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Sandwich_%281759%29 |

Sir Iarrthoir Criost wrote: Thanks for those mborn! I better tuck them away as they may come in handy. Glad you liked them, enjoy! Sir Iarrthoir Criost wrote: HMS Sandwich! That's good. Crazy, right? The funniest part is, there are FIVE other ships with the same name! How's that for originality? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Sandwich Sir Iarrthoir Criost wrote: Do we get any details on your short story? Meh, if you really want it. It's less of a WIP than a PIW (Progress In Writing). It's mostly just a funny story to send to my cousins, who are the inspiration for the characters. But yesssss, it'll be available on request. |
