Post subject:  Make Your Mark
Amid the bustle and rush of the morning's scavenger hunt, and looking somewhat the worse for wear from a glitter bomb that ambushed him just inside the door, a dwarf staggers in carrying a roll of parchment nearly as large as he is, which he unrolls a good ways on a sand-table and weighs down with glistering gems.

A tall young man with untidy black hair steps blearily up to it, blinking the sleep-dust out of his eyes, produces an already-inked quill from somewhere, and makes himself the first to sign the roll of celebrants at this year's party for posterity:

Ego, Jonathan (rex-joannes) Lovelace, Chronographus in Terrae Cycli Candentis, historiae Vaynahimis, Regni Apricitatis, Imperii Candentis Rudisque, et terrae rerumque conexarum, hic in communionem virtualis qui se vocat Mundi Sacri hoc die aniversarii tertii conditii XII a.d. Kalendae October anno Domini MMXII

(I, Jonathan (kingjon) Lovelace, Chronicler in Earth of the Shine Cycle, history of Vaynaheim, the Sunshine Kingdom, the Shine and Wild Empire, and associated countries and events, was here in the virtual community calling itself Holy Worlds on the day of the third anniversary of its founding, September 20 of the Year of our Lord 2012.)

The tall young man looks around for someone to hand the pen to, and the dwarf has sat down next to the scroll and encourages other celebrants to step up and make their mark to record their presence today for future generations.

I, Tsahraf Chahsid Mimetes, was present on the third birthday of Holy Worlds.

*wipes away tear on the back of the dwarfs neck, and puts him back in his seat *

*puts an adamant stencil on the floor, attaches petard over it, evacuates the building *

(Muffled boom.)

*lets every one back in and picks up the stencil, leaving a hole blasted into the floor in the shape of a symbol like a cross between a letter T and the head of a fountain pen *

I, NotThatShort Mimetes, otherwise known as Short, Shorty, Shortly, NotThat, Notty, Noty, Short One, (The) Tall One (TTO), Not-too-tall, Imnott, Otter, Sheriff, Mrs. Macready (Mac), Feisty, Tiger, Hobbit, Goose, Pippin, ElizaTulips, Liza, Liza dear, Lizzy, NTS, and probably some more that I'm forgetting, do hereby make my mark on this the twentieth of September, in the year two thousand and twelve, on this most awesome website.

You all have helped me so much in my writing and my walk with the Lord, and just being friends. I thank God for you all and pray that He bless you in the coming years. :)

You find yourself in a time machine, whizzing and spinning as it hurtles into the future. It stops with a bang, and you get out to find a sixty-six year old not-too-tall woman, adjusting her thick glasses as she peers at the screen of a dusty computer, which would be modern where you come from, but here is obsolete. She laughs as she reads the posts on the fiftieth make-your-mark thread, and then sighs with a smile as she reminisces, remembering the olden days when she first discovered HW and how it changed her as a person and as a Christian.
You want to talk to her, but a vague recollection (probably from an old TV show) of the time-stream and what might happen if it were disrupted comes to you, and even if that isn't real, this woman might have a heart attack if she turned to see you in her home.
You quietly tiptoe back into the machine and return to your own time.

I'll say it again: Happy birthday Holy Worlds!
(And don't say nuttin' about shifting POVs up there.)

Iri slips out from behind me and makes a grab for the pen. I push him away and he folds his arms, opening his mouth to protest.

"Get your own thread," I hiss, plucking the pen from kingjon's hand.

Iri lifts his chin. "I will," he says, in a singsong tone. "I sure will." He parades out of the thread.

"Typical," I mutter, positioning the pen over a modest corner of the scroll. I glance at kingjon. "I hope it's all right if I don't sign in a row. There'll be scrawls all over this by tonight, so..."

Lost in thought, I draw a small heart in the corner. Which name to use?

Eruwaedhiel, Eleutheria, Eterniti, Estelle...E was here, on this blessed day of Holy Worlds' third birthday...hoping, wishing, praying for many more.

Not very profound, but I can't really express how glad I am for Holy Worlds with a simple pen and scroll. I sigh.

"There." I hold out the pen for the next participant, hoping they won't choose to write with the poor dwarf as well.

"Hello, sir," the dwarf says. "Do ye happen to know where they're serving the punch and cookies? Sitting still all day is making me mighty hungry and thirsty."

"You cannot have refreshments without first undergoing the rite of passage," I reply gravely. So saying, I hurl a small ball at him, which explodes in a shower of silver and gold glitter.

"Och, sir, what a welcome," the poor fellow wheezes amid the cloud of glitter engulfing him. "Thankee most kindly, sir. I'll just stay here a bit. Maybe I don't want punch and cookies after all."

Laughing, I stride quickly to the table, where the esteemed kingjon hands me a pen.

"Has thou not heard that I am known as Gandalf Grayhame?" I ask.

Out flashes my staff, and in blazing letters I write on the parchment:

I, Lord Tarin of Holy Worlds, known on earth as Zachary Totah and a number of nicknames I shall not repeat, here do sign my name as a token of my presence on this most joyous occasion, the third birthday of the realm of Holy Worlds, September the 12th, of the year 2012 AD.

May the Lord bless this community and those within it, and may He sustain us so that we will all be gathered together 47 years hence, old age and infirmity notwithstanding, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this most beloved and reputable forum.

Furthermore, on this day may God pour his peace and love and grace upon our most honorable founder, Sir Emeth Mimetes, beset by darkness and ill events, thus keeping him from us on this happy occasion. And may our prayers be answered and may God bring our dear brother and friend speedily home.

I was only aware of last year's, but it's as good a name as any, so I'm happy to continue the tradition. I was, however, surprised that no one had started one before I did.

As the party (apparently) begins to draw to a close, the tall young man with the untidy black hair hanging over his ears and into his eyes walks wearily over to the scroll and again takes up the quill, making sure it has ink.

"Last year I missed the first day of the party and recorded my presence on the second day, so I may as well make it a tradition ..." he murmurs, then writes:

Ego, Jonathan (rex-Joannes) Lovelace, familiaris communionis qui se vocat Mundi Sacri, Dei gratia hic eram quoque in die secunda celebretatis.

(I, Jonathan Lovelace, member of the community that calls itself Holy Worlds, by the grace of God was also here in the second day of the celebration.)

The dwarf, looking much the worse for wear, begins rolling up the scroll from its head end (so as to leave room for more names until the last moment); when the party has officially ended the record will be filed in the Deep Library in the dwarven capital, which also houses each nation's census records dating back to their founding.

I, Aubrey Hansen, have lived to see another birthday of this blessed forum! In the time that has passed since the previous birthday celebration, I have published a second book, ascended to the ranks of yellow, witnessed the birth of our third forum, helped release Holy Worlds' first anthology to the world, and many other such events. It is with excitement, fondness, and deep gratefulness that I commemorate all the events of the past year by saying that yes, by God's grace, I was indeed here!

Oh, bother. I missed the Third Birthday. I don't even remember if I was on on the twentieth; I guess I thought all the Birthday threads were for planning. :blush:

Anyway, here's my mark, if there's any use for it.
