GLITTER. SPARKLE. FUZZY FELT.

From a story perspective, this isn't one of Dreamwork's new classics. It's a fairly classic feel-good kid's plot. It's solid and harmless in that regard. Not particularly memorable, but something I'd let my kids watch.

The visuals, however, are REVOLUTIONARY. Everything in the troll's world looks like felt, wool, yarn, and glitter. I'm a huge fan of color and glitter, so the visuals made me very happy. But from an animation perspective, it was very atmospheric, and beautifully rendered. Definitely worth watching for the animation, if you're into the art.

I did like how everything looked like felt and yarn. And the troll's prehensile hair was pretty cool. Definitely something younger kids should love (especially Guy Diamond and his glitter farts) but my 12 year-old was conflicted - she liked it but is a little embarrassed to admit she liked it so she's aware it was on the more juvenile side of things.

All the old songs reminded me of Gnomeo & Juliet (which is a movie I love) but the story itself wasn't as strong. I felt like they tried to substitute the songs as part of the plot rather than using the songs to reinforce it. As a result, the depth never quite got there. Even the big climactic moment, while beautiful, wasn't as emotionally gripping as it could have been because it was smothered in poetic song. But maybe that's just because my brain has a hard time following abstract lyrics vs concrete words...

I agree. Using pop songs was funny to an extent, but since it was more covers than original material, it seemed cheap. More original songs would have helped, I think.

There is no shame in liking kids movies!

She's hit that age where she's suddenly sensitive to anything being "too babyish" but she'll get past it as she gets older. Especially since she has me as an example! I'd say the majority of our collection of "kid/teen" movies are because Mom & Dad love them. ;) Hubby & I's first date was driving into the city to pick up his reserved copy of Veggie Tales: King George & the Ducky. lol

(I think one of the best ways parents can bond with their kids is taking a strong interest in the things they like. I remember my mom watching Saved by the Bell with me and my siblings. And now daughter & I love watching shows together and discussing them as we watch. Why a character in Mako Mermaids isn't being a very good friend, why lying wasn't the best choice a character could have made in an episode of Wolfblood, and at the moment - why we are getting very tired of Tomas in Violetta.)

I absolutely agree! :D Although in my future family, we run the risk of the opposite happening--mommy and daddy are so obsessed with some "kids films" that they cease to be cool... :dieshappy:

In other news, I've had several kids ask their parents if I'm Poppy, because of my hot pink hair.

Haha - that's awesome. Prehensile hair like that would be handy, I suppose. ;)
