No one's commented on it yet? I really wasn't too interested in seeing it - the trailers did not sell me at all. But I ended up really liking it. And I loved the little elements that ended up being important later in the story.

I assume you're talking about Star Trek beyond, not Star trek the first in the trilogy.
I saw it yesterday it was pretty good better in many ways than the second one. But really i'm not a fan of the reboot they feel far to much like action films and with a little tweaking you wouldn't know they were supposed to be star trek films at all.

I think we'll be seeing it this week. I loved the previous two films, so I'm excited about this one. :D

It'll be a bit weird, though, knowing that this is Chekov's last film (with that actor). :/

I am not really into Science Fiction, so I'm not really into spending the money to see Sci Fi films at the cinema. I'll probably watch it when it comes out on DVD.

I heard that they said they wouldn't be replacing anyone to play Chekov, anyone else hear about that?

I'm still not entirely won over by the idea of an alternate timeline, but I may catch up on the new Star Trek films at some point.

Has anyone watched the original ten movies? Of those, my favorites are The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and Insurrection.

I've seen all of the Original cast films and a couple of the Picard one's.

Wrath of Khan is by far the best in my opinion.

I think the alternate timeline was done well, because they acknowledged within the story that it was an alternate timeline. I thought that was cool and science-fiction-y, as opposed to just rebooting the series.

I'm not crazy about the alternate timeline but it's the only way I could have accepted a relaunch of the original characters. And I like how the movies somewhat follow the events/themes of the original movies(Like in Beyond, when Kirk and Spock consider leaving and then change their minds - it was so similar to the journey made by their predecessors without the decision that they later regretted). I intensely disliked certain scenes in Into Darkness, though. They should have known better than to touch iconic scenes without the depth of the character relationships that the original movies had as a foundation.

Meanwhile, my favorite of the movies is still Journey Home. It's just too funny. I'm not a huge NG fan but Insurrection and Nemesis are good, too.

*rises from deep absence to comment*

aaaaa I love the reboot! :D Might just be me, but I think it's phenom, and the casting choices they made are absolutely inspired. Also, despite Abrams' camera flares every place, they're beautiful cinematically.

I may have cried a little when I found out Anton Yelchin died. Still kind of torn up about it, but yeah. It was somehow oddly and impressively fortunate all the nods they did regarding Spock/Leonard Nimoy which came to mean something else when they also lost Anton/Chekhov. GUYS THE PART WHERE THEY STOLE A CELEBRATORY BEVERAGE FROM CHEKHOV'S LOCKER AND DRANK TO ABSENT FRIENDS IT WAS SO FUNNY AND YET SO EMOTIONAL I WAS CRYING A LOT BASICALLY.

But, yes. I adore the new films.

And...um, sorry if this is showing my Trekkie ignorance, but a complaint about them being too action-y to be Star Trek? TOS is literally cowboys and gunfights in space. I know some of the later series deviated from this, but Kirk was a good ole' pioneer gunslinger and the original show is, as best as technology and money and time would allow, very action-y. Also, you typically can't do a dramatic two hour film about the life cycle of tribbles. XD Maybe the movies are a bit more flashy and with a few more gunfights and explosions, but the amazing way they stick to the truth of each individual character impresses me beyond that.

Cinematically, the new movie is a little dark. There were some scenes, especially the fight scenes, that were hard to see and know what was going on. That is literally my only complaint for the film. (Oh, except for the stuff with Sulu. Some people were like "it's no big deal, you can't even tell if you're not looking for it." Well, it's pretty obvious, but that's another subject for another day.

BONES AND SPOCK ARE MY FAVORITE BROS. And that really comes out in this film and made me so happy. XD I adore all the characters, but those two and their chemistry/antagonism is the best.
