I know there were a lot of mixed reactions to this film when it was announced, and even the various trailers sent mixed messages about how "serious" the film would take itself. But, nevertheless, I can't pass up zombies, so we went to see it shortly after it was released. :dieshappy:

Although there were a few weak links in the plot, I have to say that I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a great balance between period drama, zombie horror, and sarcasm ("we're going to misquote the book with perfect irony"). The movie also had a very unique representation of the "science" of zombies (namely, they don't turn immediately and retain some of their identity at least for a time). It is also one of the few movies that go for POST-apocalyptic; by the time of the movie, the zombie virus has been going on for several years, and it has become a fact of life, but society is still very much functioning. Most books and movies are either about the onset of the virus (World War Z), or society has been completely obliterated (The Walking Dead), so this was a fresh take.

Have you seen it? Have you read the book? What did you think of either?

I forgot all about this release! I really want to see it; I chose not to go to the cinema to watch it, but I definitely will when it comes out on dvd!

I don't do yuck and zombies tend to be in that territory but I like Austen so I've been curious about this. But I'm too afraid of the yuck factor... (haven't seen Warm Bodies for the same reason though my sister says there's only one moment that she found squicky. )

Sadly, it's pretty yucky. The Austen culture is delightful, but the zombies aren't shy about being, well, zombies. Also there's a lot of zombie fighting of varying degrees (i.e., with swords and whatnot o.O).
