It was because of the opened water butt on shipboard where the sailors would go to drink, and, of course, talk. So it's Navy slang. |

Sometimes I can 'smell' rain before it actually rains, depending how much rainclouds there are and stuff, so I close the windows before the rain starts falling. And then I tell my cat I can tell the future when it rains...Not that she responds.

It's not really a new word to me as I've heard it before, but I've actually used this one twice today for some strange reason: Eclectic. eclectic definition wrote: 1. selecting or choosing from various sources.
2. made up of what is selected from different sources. 3. not following any one system, as of philosophy, medicine, etc., but selecting and using what are considered the best elements of all systems. |

Carp: (v.) To complain in an annoying way. early 13c., originally "to talk," from Old Norse karpa "to brag," which is of unknown origin; meaning turned toward "find fault with" (late 14c.), probably by influence of Latin carpere "to slander, revile," literally "to pluck" (see harvest (n.)). Related: Carped; carping. Same root word as Carpe Diem, but please don't complain the whole day. |
