As Tolkien defined it (if I understand him correctly), a eucatastrophe wasn't just "a happy ending," but a suddenly happy ending, when it looked like all was lost. In the same way that "catastrophe" doesn't just mean "ruin," but "sudden ruin."

I didn't realize kerfuffle was a real word! Hubby makes fun of me when I say it and thinks I'd made it up (I was starting to think maybe I had!). I'm going to have to show him it's a real word!

Growing up, my family had a board game called Balderdash. It's a game where players are given a word and they each write down a fake definition. These are then read aloud and voted on. A player gets points if they guess the correct definition but they can also earn points if people vote for their fake definition. We enjoyed learning the real definitions for these words and added several to our vocabulary. For example:

Curpin: a bird's behind
Marlock: to romp

This isn't exactly a new word, but it is a fun one!

defenestration - the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. expulsion, riddance, ejection, exclusion - the act of forcing out someone or something

I like how it explicitly says "something or SOMEONE."

Since this is so quiet, I felt the need to search for a new word...and I came up with some funny ones.

Adomania - The sense that the future is coming too quickly
Anecdoche - A conversation where no one is listening
Kairosclerosis - The moment when you realize you're happy
Monachopsis - The subtle persisting sense of being out of place
Opia - The ambiguous intensity from looking someone in the eye
Rubatosis - The unsettling awareness of your heartbeat
Vellichor - The strange wistfulness of used book stores
Zenosyne - The sense that time keeps going faster

Kakorrhaphiophobia - the fear of failure. I have no idea how one pronounces it! :D

Phosphene- the light you see when you close your eyes and press your fingers to them

Petrichor (I had heard this word before, but I was just reintroduced to it, and it's so delightful that I just had to write it down if only to hear the sound of lovely the syllables in my head again)- the way it smells when rain falls on parched earth

Thank you for this! I've run across this word a few times years ago, but every time I've wanted to use it (which is mostly in talking to myself, or to God :)) I haven't been able to remember enough of it to look it up. (And, as usual, Google wasn't any help.) But the "on parched earth" part, which is new to me (it had been cited as just "the smell after rain" where I've seen it before) may help me remember that the first syllable is "petr", not "pel". :)
