To start off, these flats are in the northeastern part of the country of Yanara. The word rayo came from the Spanish word for lightning. The people that live here are one of the four tribes of the kingdom of Yanara, the Procella (the Latin word for storm). The plains and estuaries themselves are prone to thunderstorms during the summer months. There are some foothills in their territory, as they border the tall mountains to the west.

The Procella are one of the three tribes that do not commonly possess winged members. The Skreeks (which make up the tribes) are divided into two types: Winged and non-winged.

The Procella live in these vast mountains all their lives. Each one has a bond with a creature called the thunderbird (which I will make a link once I make a thread for that).

They have minimal mindspeaking ability, something that each tribe possesses with it's representative animal. This thunderbird is chosen through a ceremony like so: An adolescent Procella will climb to the tallest of the mountains, called God's Pinnacle, which is a holy place to them and their neighbors in the west. It is here that he/she will sing the Song of Gales (silly Zelda stole Song of Storms. xP). A thunderbird, a creature that looks a bit like a dinosaur/horse, lives in the wild until one responds to the song. Then these creatures will come to their owner's aid whenever they call. When they aren't occupied with their owner, they live as they would in the wild. A few might remain with their owners full-time, but this is rare.

The Procella have a competitive spirit like all the tribes but love and value jewelry crafting more than other pursuits. They also pride themselves in colorful clothing and bright patterns.

That's all I've got. Feel free to ask questions to help fill in the blanks!

I can't remember, is your world connected and thereby influenced by earthly languages, or are you just having their language be influenced by earthly languages they other authors do?

That's interesting.

So are they easily tamed, or are they tamed through mind-speak? Are these animals created with an inherent desire to have a Procella companion, or do the people just twist them to be their companions (sort of the way people did with wolves/dogs)?

I grew tired of coming up with names from scratch (none of the words had much relation language-wise) and I was reading my Spanish Textbook when I thought of the Rayo. But their culture is more centered around Spanish words while their neighbors to the south are deeply rooted in Latin and nature-use (Like someone would be named Fang or something). But no, they have no direct relation to our world in the story.

Also, the thunderbirds are born with the desire to have a companion, like the loftwings in Skyward Sword. Elohim created them with the purpose for them to work as one unit. It was his blessing to the Yanarans.
