Atmospheric and chemical conditions on Erde cause most organic materials to produce a blue fire when burned, similar to the flames on a gas stove in our world. These blue flames represent a fire that burns more slowly and coolly than our world’s fire. A square of fabric can burn for up to a half-hour before disintegrating, and human skin can touch the fire for approximately fifteen seconds before becoming burned.

These properties make blue fire ideal for home use. It is safer to handle because it does not spread rapidly or burn humans instantly. Its light glows steadily and brightly, produces natural colors, and is gentle on the eyes. Because even the cheapest of materials such as scrap cloth and plant trimmings burn for a decent amount of time, blue fire is a practical lighting option for poor families and travelers.

However, because blue fire burns at a relatively cool temperature, it is not very useful for warmth or cooking. For cultures in the south and most of the central region, where the temperature stays relatively warm during the night, a more reliable heat source is not necessary. These cultures prefer foods that are prepared room temperature or slow-roasted, and very little of their industry relies on heat.

Blue fire does not fulfill the needs of the cultures in the frigid north, however, nor can it sustain cultures with metalworking and other industries dependent on heat. To survive, these cultures turn to the other colors of fire. Depending on the chemical composition of the object being burned, fire can burn in any shade of the rainbow, with the color of the flame representing the intensity of the fire. Purple fire burns even more slowly and coolly than blue fire and is extremely rare. Green fire burns faster and hotter than blue fire, and the intensity increases up the scale to red, a vicious, devouring monster. To the southern and central cultures, anything above yellow fire is considered dangerous and evil. But to the cultures that depend on heat, it is a necessary risk, one they have studied for generations to learn how to produce.

I really like this idea. It adds even more visual uniqueness to Erde.

You know Philli, for supposedly complaining that you're no good at world-building, you do a very good job! :D

Thank you, Jonathan.

Thanks so much, Andrew! :D That means a lot to me. I don't know if I ever said I was bad at world-building... I didn't know because I never did it!

 You are amazing at world building *Danko should do some :P * One question, I had an idea like this for fire a while ago, would you consider me copying you if I used something similar to this?

Thank you so much! :D Yes, you should do some world-building.

No, it wouldn't be copying at all. I'm sure I'm not the first person to use another color of fire in a fantasy world, and you'll put your own unique spin on the concept in your own world.

What about the different elements that create various colors of fire? Potassium, I think it was, burned with a green flame, while sodium burns with a purple one. How do you handle things like that?

I am making up the rules for what burns what shade. Because it is my unique world, I am deciding arbitrarily what burns what color. Most organic materials burn blue. Human flesh burns purple. I haven't decide what kind of materials burn the other shades, but I will develop them as I go.

I really really like this, this, 'system' of fire, I also just like fire. This is very very interesting and I can't even imagine all the ways it could affect different environments and scenarios...this is cool.

Thank you very much, gentlemen. :D I got this idea rather randomly, but I've been able to work it into a lot of the science and culture of the world. Quite fun!

You're welcome. I'm looking forward to seeing those applications! ...come to think of it, this reminds me of a childhood fantasy of different lazers that were color-coded to what they would do... o.O That was awhile ago...
