| Post subject: | The Raubvogel |
Raubvogel is the general term used by the Volk to refer to any species of large sentient birds. Meaning “birds of prey,” raubvogel is defined as any bird with a wingspan of over five feet. Because there are only a handful of small bird species inhabiting Erde, most birds qualify as raubvogel, but the most infamous raubvogel is a hostile flock that haunts the Wald in the south. Raubvogel are rather standard in appearance. Most raubvogel resemble hawks or falcons, with sharp talons and feathers in a colorful array of earth-tone patterns; a minority have owl facial features. What sets the raubvogel apart is their massive size. The average raubvogel is comparable to a large dog, but raubvogel the sizes of horses are very common. The largest raubvogel ever recorded in Erde history was almost as tall as a two-story building. Many raubvogel are capable of carrying humans, either in their talons or on their backs. Raubvogel transported a few of the original settlers to the planet, but most raubvogel migrated to Erde on their own. Since their arrival on Erde, the raubvogel have become increasingly hostile to humans. Most retreated to the deepest forests and the highest cliffs, where they spitefully treat any human that is foolish enough to transgress their territory. Despite their aloofness, all raubvogel are sentient beings that posses the ability to talk – an ability they will use to enter into treaties with humans on occasion. Many clans of the west-central forests coexist with the raubvogel of the area, while some northern nobles have hired flocks as armies. A few raubvogel are still born and raised in captivity as loyal pets, but even tame raubvogel tend to be free-spirited and difficult to control. To prove their independence, most raubvogel speak in the human tongue only when necessary, preferring to use their own bird speech to torment their prey. The raubvogel’s longest-standing treaty, however, is with the living trees, particularly an inhospitable forest in the southwest known as the Wald. It is speculated that this friendship formed when the raubvogel carried the first elfin settlers to the planet; the elves bargained for land in the woods, and their bird companions found a home as well. The semi-sentient trees share the birds’ hostility towards humans, and the two armies often act as one. Many raubvogel nest in living trees, and the raubvogel are reportedly the only beings that understand the trees’ speech. Some birds have even adapted their diet to include the trees' fruit in addition to the preferred small animals. So strong is the bond between the races, it is rumored that to gain the birds’ friendship is to gain the friendship of the woods. |

What smaller birds live on Erde? Since raubvogel are carnivorous, what animals do they eat? |

I haven't developed the smaller birds yet, but I will. |

Philadelphia wrote: I haven't developed the smaller birds yet, but I will. Good. Philadelphia wrote: At the moment I haven't detailed the raubvogel's diet (you may've noticed - these aren't quite as detailed as the criet), but in general they'll eat anything smaller than themselves that they don't have a friendship/truce with. Also, they aren't completely carnivorous in that they will eat the fruit of the Wald. That's an interesting fact about them that makes them different from other birds of prey. |

Their diet will vary depending on where they live. Those in the forest only have small forest animals and the fruit to eat. Those that are working with humans can either go hunting or eat what the humans eat. So I would say, in general, their diet consists of small animals that are available in the region (since these birds can be found all over Erde), supplemented with vegetation if necessary. How's that sound? |

Thanks! I added a sentence about it to the last paragraph. |

Philadelphia wrote: Some birds have even adapted their diet to consist of the trees' fruit as opposed to the preferred small animals. Should it instead say... Philadelphia wrote: Some birds have even adapted their diet to include the trees' fruit in addition to the preferred small animals. ...since that was the impression I got from your previous comments.

It could be either, actually. I'm leaving it open. |
