Thorn-sunned.

The sky is completely transparent, the stars are visible all day long, as in space, unless the sky is covered with clouds. Everything below the sky is lit by the sun, which seems even brighter. The clouds seem brighter because they are contrasted with the black of space. One can see farther, as only dust or clouds obscure distant objects. The thorn sun is parallel with the horizon, or at a small angle, and, other than clouds, there would be no light foreshadowing dawn. The dawn would be instantaneously complete, like a switch being thrown. North and south would have a definite difference in peoples minds, being distinguished by the thicker or pointed ends of the sun. The constellations would have more to do with more people, because people would not have to stay up at night to see them. The stars rarely twinkle.

The polar ice lands are smaller, the hot, equatorial lands extending further north and south.

There are wide plateau lands covering continent sized areas very high above sea level, with great, gentle hills reaching higher than mountains reach in lower lands. The fringes of these lands have huge, wooded ridges sloping down, often into the sea or lakes. Across these lands there are wandering cracks, without branchings, but they never cross each other, though they often go along beside each other, for long ways, as near as several yards to each other. They can be as wide as several hundred yards or as narrow as a foot. The edges are right angles downward, and the sides are cliffs down to near or below sea level, where there is a floor. At the ends of these cracks they taper, and the floors slope up the many thousands of feet to the top level.

People tend to be smaller in general. They are less likely to be nervous or excited, need less sleep, and can see smaller things. The languages tend to be more Nordic, or Japanese like.

Plants tend to have far more variations, but all the different variations are far more similar.

There is less dust in the air, and more on surfaces.

That is all I have yet that I can remember. Please critique. What are your favorite ideas? Do you have any ideas for further development? Did anything confuse you? Do you have any questions?

It would be interesting to have in a story where some one goes from a thorn-sunned Earth to a round-sunned Earth, and to describe how alien the round-sunned world was to him.

Sounds pretty fascinating (pretty, and fascinating to be exact)! I really like the idea of the highlands and forests. What are the animals there like? The fact that dust doesn't stay in the air for long makes me think that the air is thinner or gravity is stronger or there's less wind, how does this effect flying creatures if they live on this planet?

Thank you RunningWolf!

The highlands are almost completely bare rock, with grassland over parts, and tundra around the very edges, very narrow. They are very cold, maybe making up for the smaller polar ice caps. But I do not believe that they get more snow than the lowlands, which is strange. They are windswept, perhaps continually windswept.

As for the dust, it is actually the sun that is continually forcing the dust out of the air. The cone and thorn suns emit extra radiations that are high in the Spectrum of Existences, and every substance on such planets are effected by it.

I will post about cone-sunned Earths... and post about their near cataclysmic transformation into thorn-sunned Earths.

Thorn-sunned Earths are ancient, post-apocalyptic planets.

The highlands are raised in the transition, and the cracks are made by lightning, lightning out of space, of a different sort than normal, also having to do with the Spectrum of Existences.

You're welcome!
Wow, so they're sort of like dead/dieing planets? Or are they more like planets that have survived something bad and are either going to continue getting worse, or start to flourish with life again? They sound pretty forbidding...Where do people live, in the forests? What do they eat?

Off the highlands. Between and around the highlands there are habitable lands, but the sea takes up the rest, so as far as I know there are far more Orks (people that live in the sea).

I think there are few large animals, mainly humans and creeping things. The humans would mainly eat green plants and creeping things. I do not know whether the thorn-sunned Earths are dying. That is a story worthy question.

I believe the seas teem with life, and are very strange, and viewed with great suspicion, especially the Orks. This is because there was no sea life, and no Orks, before the transformation because... there was no sea. I will explain in the post about cone-sunned Earths.

They sound very interesting, it sounds like every thorn-sunned earth will have huge potential for dying or flourishing in turn-two of them could be extremely different from each other and every other 'similar' planet...right? :D I like how you have so many varieties of 'alternate earths', you really change things up, keeping things interesting!
I like how they can transform too, like the sea appearing, that would be pretty astonishing to any pre-existing races on that planet.

If the pre-existing race survived.

I now have threads about cone-sunned Earths here:

Does anyone have any questions or ideas?

Here is the development I have posted on the other threads:

They would think differently about darkness too. We think of the sky being dark at night and bright during the day except on cloudy days, and they would think of the sky as dark all the time except on cloudy days.

Like the Streels of Urtah? That was actually one of the first things I thought of when I thought of the cracks. Of course anything falling from the top of the cracks would be lethal to anything below, and since they are so abrupt there would be a great danger of falling in, and if you were on the bottom the only plausible way of escape would be out of the one of the ends.

Ugh, I just had an incredible idea. You would only understand how incredible it is if I had already posted about cone-sunned Earths. What if cone-suns gradually become thorn-suns? I will post on cone-sunned Earths post haste.

I've just done a lot more reading...and I'm pretty amazed and boggled at all the details...I'll just say I really like the huge venus flytrap-like plants and the liquefied earth and the radiation-light stuff is pretty amazing too.
Sorry I can't read all of it. :P
